PENFIELD — The annual Boy Scout Polar Bear campout was held at Camp Mountain Run this past weekend, with Clearfield’s Troop 9 earning second place honors behind Johnsonburg and in front of DuBois.
This year’s scoring for the Boy Scouts Polar Bear campout was on a 25-point per station maximum; thus a possible total score of 250 points. The scores were tabulated and delivered to Greg Kunselman, this year’s chairman, to award the engraved medals to the top three patrols.
The third place patrol with a total score of 196 points was the Panther Patrol of Troop 28, chartered to the J.E. DuBois Hose Co. in DuBois. Second place medals went to the scouts of the Black Bird Patrol of Troop 9 in Clearfield, chartered to the Saint Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, with a total of 202 points. With a score of 209, the first place medals were earned by the members of the Owl Patrol, Troop 83 of Johnsonburg, chartered to Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Also presented at the awards ceremony were this year’s patches to all participants. Each scout and leader received the third quarter of a four quarter circle that will be completed next year at the 50th annual Polar Bear.
Everyone who slept out also received an Overnighter strip. The Stoltz Family Dealerships sponsored this year’s awards and weekend encampment.
After the awards ceremony, religious services were held. Catholic Mass was held in Walker Center led by the Rev. Fr. Brandon Klekner (Eagle Scout) from St. Francis church in Clearfield.
Bucktail Council staff offered a Scout’s Own service in the Stackpole Dining Hall. Scouts and leaders then returned to their campsites for a self-prepared hot meal in their campsites.
