Campus Roundup: Area athletes making their mark this season

Numerous athletes are participating in fall sports at several colleges this season. And, a few of those have already stood out on the field. Here's a look at what some local athletes are accomplishing.

Football
Former Clearfield standout Tanner Kelly continues to lead Albright College as a redshirt sophomore quarterback this season. Kelly was recently named Middle Atlantic Conference Player of the Week for a big day against Kean. Kelly completed 18 of 22 passes in the game for 447 yards and threw for four touchdowns. He also ran for another TD. So far this season, Kelly has completed 62 passes for 900 yards and eight touchdowns. He has also rushed for 109 yards on 38 attempts. Albright is 2-1 on the season.

Another former Clearfield player, Dave Richards, has played in all three games for Shippensburg University this season. Richards, a redshirt junior, has carried the ball 19 times for 51 yards. The Raiders are 0-3.

Former Curwensville standout Nick Sipes has played in three games for the Clarion Golden Eagles as a freshman this season. Sipes has 15 tackles and one fumble recovery to his credit.

Curwensville's Shawn Sopic is also making a name for himself at Clarion. Sopic has played in three games and already has an interception, a fumble recovery and 15 tackles to his credit as a freshman.

Another Golden Tide alum - Nate Sipes - is a redshirt sophomore on the Slippery Rock squad. Sipes has seen action in one game and has four yards on two carries. The Rock is 3-0 on the season.

J.D. Skebo is also a member of the Slippery Rock team. Skebo, who is a redshirt freshman offensive lineman, was recently honored as a Scholar-Athlete for the 2006-07 season. He is an Exploratory major with a 3.571 GPA.

Moshannon Valley alum Brandon Murarik is on the squad at Slippery Rock. Murarik has three tackles in one game played.

Purchase Line's Garrett Anderson is a sophomore linebacker at Westminster College. The Titans are 2-1.

Former Purchase Line standout Logan Small is starting as a running back at Saint Vincent College. Small has rushed for 109 yards on 32 carries and caught a pass for 31 yards. The Bearcats are 0-3.

Moshannon Valley alumnus Andy Stine is a freshman offensive lineman for Thiel College. The Tomcats are 1-2.

West Branch's Adam Andrasko is a redshirt junior at Lock Haven University. He has 23 tackles and one fumble recovery to his credit. The Eagles are 0-2 on the year.

Former Glendale running back Gary Walstrom Jr. is starting as a tight end at Valley Forge Military College. Walstrom also starts on special teams. He has two tackles on the year for the Trojans (1-0).

Clearfield alum Beau Ryan is a sophomore at Juniata College. Ryan has two tackles this season.

Former Clearfield Bison Devin Yastro is also on the Juniata squad. Yastro is listed on the roster as a sophomore tight end/fullback. Juniata is 0-2 this season.

Clearfield's Tyler Kirkwood is a freshman inside linebacker at Grove City College. The Wolverines are 1-2 on the season.

Purchase Line's Chad Gromley is a freshman defensive lineman for Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Crimson Hawks are 3-0.

Men's Soccer
Former Clearfield standout Lucas Feathers has played in eight games for the Slippery Rock soccer team. Feathers, a sophomore, has one goal so far this season. SRU is currently 5-2-2.

Clearfield alumnus Alan Baldwin has played in four games for Westminster this season, starting three of them. Baldwin has one goal and one assist as a freshman for the Titans (3-2-1).

Former Clearfield Bison Brandon McQuillen is the starting goalie for the Penn State Altoona squad. McQuillen has started five games this season with a 3-1 record and 19 saves. He also has an assist. PSU-Altoona is 6-1 on the year.

Clearfield's Mark Auman is a freshman midfielder for Lock Haven. Auman has one assist in three games for the Eagles. LHU is 4-1 on the year.

Women's Soccer
Clearfield's Juliana Howell is seeing lots of time as a freshman forward at Slippery Rock. Howell has played in eight games, starting five. She has two goals so far this season. SRU is 7-2 on the year.

Philipsburg-Osceola alum Ashlea Cowher is a member of the Clarion women's team. The Lady Golden Eagles are 3-4 on the season.

Former P-O soccer player Alissa Murphy is a junior on the Juniata women's team. The Lady Eagles are 4-1 on the year.

West Branch's Carrie Harsomchuck is a sophomore at Lycoming College. She has played in one game and has one shot on goal. The Lady Warriors are 5-1 this year.

Former Moshannon Valley Damsel Ali Yaple is on the Mount Aloysius College women's team. Yaple has played in all four games this year with two shots on goal. The Lady Mounties are 0-4.

Moshannon Valley's Joanna Shylock is also playing at Mount Aloysius. Shylock has played in three games for the Lady Mounties.

Philipsburg-Osceola's Andrea Dubensky is playing at Penn State Altoona. Dubensky, a sophomore, has played in two games. PSU-Altoona is 2-2-0 on the season.

Former Clearfield Lady Bison Amber Weaver is on the squad at Geneva College. Weaver has played in four games for the Lady Tornadoes. She has 28 saves and a record of 2-2. Geneva is 2-4 overall on the season.

Clearfield's Ashleigh Mohney is a member of the California University of Pennsylvania women's team. Mohney has played in eight games and has one shot on goal. Cal is 0-7-1 on the year.

Curwensville's Danielle Struble is on the Pitt-Greensburg women's team. Struble has played in seven games and has two goals on the season. The Lady Bobcats are 1-5-1.

Rifle
Curwensville graduate Cadet Captain Matt Hamilton, a senior at the U.S.M.A. at West Point, was one of nine athletes chosen to be on the Army fall sports schedule poster. Cpt. Hamilton is the team captain for the Black Knight rifle squad, which begins their season on October 20th.

Cross County
Philipsburg-Osceola's Tara Sipe is running for Penn State Altoona this season. Sipe finished 11th in a dual meet against St. Francis with a time of 24:06. She has also finished 18th at the Shenandoah Hornet Harrier Invite with a time of 26:55 and 20th at the Blue-White Classic with a time of 19:01.

Volleyball
Former P-O standout Erin Albert is a junior middle hitter for Juniata College. Albert has 73 kills, 25 digs, 12 service points and 14 blocks on the year. Juniata is 12-1 on the season.

West Branch's Haley White is a sophomore on the Clarion University squad. White has played in two games and has six kills and one block.

Former Glendale alum Michelle Peoples is on the squad at Mount Aloysius College. Peoples has played in two games and has two service points and one dig to her credit. The Lady Mounties are 2-5.

All former area athletes who play a sanctioned college sport are eligible to be recognized by The Progress for their athletic endeavors in the College Roundup.
