Campus Corner: Kelly and Kyler receive big honors for their efforts

Several area athletes have finished up their collegiate seasons this spring. Here's a glimpse of how our local high school graduates are performed in their respective sports:
Football
Tanner Kelly (Clearfield, Albright) and Casey Lawrence, a graduate of Delone Catholic, were named Co-Outstanding Freshmen Male Athletes at Albright College's Athletics Banquet on Thursday. Kelly started seven games at quarterback for the Lions last fall, and led the MAC Conference in passing yards and total offense per game. Kelly tossed 19 touchdown passes, and earned MAC Rookie of the Year honors.
Wrestling
Matt Kyler (Clearfield, Army) was awarded the Mike Natvig Award at Army's annual wrestling banquet. The Natvig Award is given to the most oustanding wrestler at the school.
Kyler led the team this season as a freshman with a 31-12 record while recording six falls and 10 major decisions. In his first-ever college wrestling match, Kyler finished second at the Oklahoma Gold Classic, and followed that up with a second-place finish in his second match at the Body Bar Invitational. He also went on to win the New York State Championships, and place fifth in the Nittany Lion Open.
Kyler placed second at the EIWA Championships, earning himself a trip to nationals.
Baseball
Brandon Baughman (Clearfield, Geneva) was named to the 2007 All-American Mideast Conference North Division team on Monday. Baughman, who received honorable mention status, compiled a 4-5 record this season. Baughman recorded three complete games and two shutouts.
Andrew Kirsch (Clearfield, Seton Hill) batted .246 this season for the Griffins. Kirsch concluded his junior season with four doubles, two home runs and 12 RBIs.
Scott Hugney (Clearfield, Slippery Rock) was unable to finish out the season for The Rock after being sidelined with an ankle injury. Hugney appeared in two games this season for SRU.
Bart McGary (Curwensville, Pitt-Bradford) finished his first season at Pitt-Bradford with a .277 batting average in 22 games played. McGary tallied two doubles and five RBIs.
Phil Solley (Curwensville, Pitt-Bradford) concluded his first season with the Panthers, hitting .429 while serving as a catcher and designated hitter. Solley tallied nine hits, including one double and had seven RBIs.
Tyler Noel (Glendale, Mansfield) went 1-4 in nine appearances this season. Noel finished with an 8.18 ERA, walked 10 and struck out 13.
Dustin Neff (Harmony, Mount Aloysius) was 0-0 with a 15.12 ERA this season for the Mounties in 8.1 innings pitched. Neff walked 11 and struck out three.
Paul Keith (Moshannon Valley, PSU-Altoona) finished with a team-best 1.98 earned run average in nine appearances. Keith notched three complete games while pitching 27.1 innings. He had 18 strikeouts and four saves while compiling a 1-3 record. At the plate Keith batted .281 with a triple, home run and six RBIs.
Phil Keith (Mo Valley, PSU-Altoona) batted .222 in 17 games played for the Lions. Keith tallied six hits, scored four runs and knocked in a run.
Paul Hawkins (Mo Valley, Penn State) went 3-0 on the mound for the Nittany Lions this season with a 3.52 earned run average. Hawkins pitched 30.2 innings, striking out 11 and walking 10. He also earned a save.
Matt Adams (Philipsburg-Osceola, Slippery Rock) was named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division first team, and to the All-North Atlantic Regional team by Daktronics, Inc. after finishing with the league's third-best batting average in his freshman season. Adams, who cracked the starting lineup this season as a catcher, finished with a .414 BA to help lead SRU to the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional Tournament. He finished with team-highs in doubles (20) and home runs (4), and also had a triple and 31 RBIs.
Adam White (P-O, West Virginia) had the second-best batting average for the Mountaineers this season. White batted .367 with nine doubles, one triple and 31 RBIs. White also drew 22 walks and took one for the team seven times to raise his final on base percentage to .442. He also finished the season errorless while appearing in 48 games.
Dusty Woodring (P-O, California of Pa.) picked up 48 hits this season for the Vulcans. Woodring batted .329 with eight doubles, nine home runs, 31 RBIs and had a .411 on base percentage.
Jeremy Potter (P-O, California of Pa.) collected 44 hits to finished with a .349 batting average. Potter had four doubles, one home run and 29 RBIs.
Ryan Heeman (P-O, California of Pa.) concluded with a 5.56 ERA and 3-4 record in 12 appearances. Heeman racked up 45.1 innings pitched, and went the distance twice.
Ryan Mostyn (P-O, Indiana of Pa.) batted .190 in 32 games played while starting for the Crimson Hawks. Mostyn finished the year with 17 RBIs. IUP concluded its season with 20 wins, marking the first time in nine years the team has won 20 or more games.
Colt Viehdorfer (West Branch, Allegheny) went 4-5 on the mound the season for Allegheny. Viehdorfer posted a 4.82 ERA in 56 innings pitched, and recorded five complete games. Viehdorfer struck out 34 and walked 11.
Softball
Amanda Shomo (Glendale, PSU-Altoona) completed her 2007 season batting .227 in 30 games played. Shomo had six doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs.
Alyssa English (P-O, Bloomsburg) recently produced a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the Huskies' 2-1 win over East Stroudsburg in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional Semifinals. Bloomsburg fell to Lock Haven 7-0 in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship.
Rachelle Yarger (P-O, Clarion) batted .241 in 26 games for the Lady Golden Eagles. Yarger produced two doubles, one home run, one stolen base and seven RBIs. Yarger also had a team-best fielding percentage among starters, committing just one error.
Track and Field
Nathan Shadeck (Clearfield, Slippery Rock) earned a silver medal at the 2007 PSAC track and field championships in the 400-meter hurdle event. Shadeck finished the race in a time of 53.49 seconds, less than a second behind Shippenburg's Bernard Richards.
