HYDE - Like many high school football players across the country, Clearfield Area High School senior Andrew Janocko has been dreaming of continuing his career and his education at a Division I school.
But unlike most, Janocko's dream will become reality after signing his letter of intent with the University of Pittsburgh.
"Playing big-time football has always been my dream," Andrew said. "Since I was a little kid that has been one of goals."
The choice to head to Pitt wasn't easy. In addition to the Panthers, Janocko also had Penn State looking at him as well as several offers from Division I-AA schools.
"St. Francis was going to give me a full ride," Andrew said. "I really like coach (Dave) Opfar. I made an official visit there and I liked what they were doing. But I think it really came down to Pitt and Penn State."
Something Andrew and his family had to consider was finances. While Penn State and Pitt were recruiting Janocko, neither was offering money at this point. St. Francis and others were offering to pay for some or all of his schooling.
"It was a big financial decision," said Clearfield head football coach (and Andrew's father) Tim Janocko. "There were a couple Division 1-AA schools like St. Francis and Robert Morris and others that were offering some money. So it was a big financial decision for our family."
But Andrew had his heart set on Division I-A and the Panthers impressed the Janocko's the most.
"The final factor had to be my recruiting trip," Andrew said. "I made an official visit there and I really liked it. I liked the things they were doing and I really liked the coaching staff. Penn State was probably my favorite for a while, but on the big scale I probably have a better opportunity going to Pitt. And that's not taking anything away from Penn State. I just think my opportunity is a little better at Pitt."
The opportunity to get on the field could come right away as Andrew is hoping that his skills as a holder on extra points and field goals will serve him well early in his collegiate career. Andrew was the holder for the Bisons since his sophomore season.
"They don't have a holder right now and I'm hoping to try out for that," he said. "Once I get down there in June, hopefully I can win the starting job and get on the field right away."
And getting on the field right away can only help Andrew's chances down the road as he hopes to one day get a chance to be the Panthers starting quarterback.
"It's all about getting your foot in the door and getting to where you can gain opportunities in practice and show what you can do," he said.
"It's a long road," Coach Janocko said. "In Division I football you need breaks, you need luck and you have to be in the right place at the right time. If he works hard he may get the opportunity."
Andrew led the Bisons to a 7-4 record and berth in the District 9 Class AAA title game in 2006. He completed 137-of-246 passes for 1,947 yards and 13 touchdowns, while tossing nine interceptions. He also scored seven rushing touchdowns and played defensive back. In his junior year, Andrew passed for 1,716 yards and 15 touchdowns on a team that won the D-9 Class AAA title and made it to the first round of the PIAA Tournament.
He's also a starter on the Clearfield basketball team and pitches for the Bison baseball team.
"I'm very proud of Andrew because he's worked so hard, and he's done it the right way," Coach Janocko said. "He didn't have any shortcuts, and he was always under the microscope. He was always under a lot of pressure being the coach's son. He has always handled himself in a way that has made his mother (Trina) and I proud of him."
