Clearfield downed by Keyser, W.Va.
Saturday, August 30, 2014

By Mike Minnich For The Progress
KEYSER, W.Va. -The Clearfield Bison were unable to make leads of 17-0 and 30-14 stick, allowing 29 unanswered points to fall to the Keyser Golden Tornado, 43-30, in the season opener for both schools on Friday night at Tornado Alley.
Keyser extended its home winning streak to 14 games.
For Keyser, Cody Rodeheaver rushed for 195 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries.
Garrett Crites scored on a punt return and ran for a 2-point conversion to go with 74 yards on the ground.
Ryan Streets ran for a touchdown and completed two of four passes for 57 yards and hit Vinnie Cuthbertson for the tying 2-point conversion. Cuthbertson also had a 34-yard reception.
Keyser's defensive front recorded four sacks and held Clearfield to just 37 rushing yards on 27 carries.
For Clearfield, Cody Spaid completed 10 of 27 passes for 260 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception, but was just 4-of-19 for 78 yards with no touchdowns and that interception after the half.
His primary target was Ryan Lezzer, who hauled in seven balls for 187 yards and three scores, but had just one catch for five yards in the second half.
Erik Sellers led Clearfield in rushing with 28 yards on 11 carries and also threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Nick Kovalick.
Clearfield received to start the game.
After picking up their second first down of the drive on a 2-yard sneak by Sellers on fourth-and-1, the Bison went to the air, with Spaid hitting Lezzer for a 49-yard score.
Clearfield led, 7-0, with 10:01 left in the first quarter.
Keyser went three-and-out on its first possession of the season, and Spaid and Lezzer hooked up again for gains of 45 yards and 48 yards, the latter for their second TD of the game.
Clearfield led, 14-0, with 7:24 to go in the quarter.
It got worse for Keyser, as Streets was intercepted on the Tornado's next play from scrimmage.
But the Keyser defense held Clearfield to a 22-yard field goal by Spencer Herrington to make it a 17-0.
Keyser's third possession came in threes. Rodeheaver moved the chains on third down three times, and Streets connected with Hunter Kasmier for a 23-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the first quarter.
Clearfield's advantage was trimmed to 17-7.
After a Bison punt, Rodeheaver went 43 yards to the 1, then finished the job himself on the next play.
Keyser was back within a field goal, 17-14, with 10:32 left in the half.
And it nearly got better for Keyser when a fumble on Clearfield's first play on its next drive bounced around, but was recovered by the Bison.
On fourth-and-4, Sellers, part of a rotating group of quarterbacks for the Bison, hit a wide-open Kovalick in the seam for a 40-yard touchdown.
The extra point was blocked and Clearfield led, 23-14, with 8:42 to go in the half.
The Bison tacked on another TD on their final drive of the second quarter, picking up three third downs to set up a 23-yard strike from Spaid to Lezzer to make it a 30-14 game at the break.
Keyser kicked off to start the second half, too, after their captains mistakenly deferred again at the half. Fortunately for the Tornado, the defense held and forced a three-and-out.
On second down, Streets hit Cuthbertson for a gain of 34 yards.
Rodeheaver moved the chains on third down again, then picked up two yards on fourth-and-1 from the Clearfield 6.
Two plays later, Streets pushed the pile for the touchdown.
Crites ran for 2 to cut the deficit in half, 30-22, with seven minutes left in the third quarter.
A personal foul on the play was assessed on the kickoff, and Clearfield then made it even harder on itself, downing the ball at its own 1 after it was clear it would not bounce into the end zone.
On third-and-10, Spaid threw from his own end zone under pressure to Dagan Folmar for a gain of 29 yards.
The drive stalled from there, though, and Clearfield punted.
Keyser couldn't do anything either with its drive.
Clearfield gained a first down on the legs of Spaid, but punted four plays later after two sacks.
Crites went 52 yards on a punt return, and Streets floated a perfect ball to Cuthbertson in the back right corner of the end zone to tie the game.
Three Spaid incompletions later, Crites had a second punt return for a TD nullified by a block in the back.
Keyser went to work again from its own 38. Rodeheaver gained 12 yards on third down, and Crites went for 21 three plays later.
From the Clearfield 13, Rodeheaver picked up 11 yards, and then scored from the 2. Jose Morales' kick was good.
Keyser led for the first time, 37-30, with 7:32 left.
Clearfield was flagged for offensive pass interference, then Spaid was sacked for an 11-yard loss.
Facing second-and-36, Spaid connected with Josh Sorbera for 31 yards.
A drop on third down and an incomplete pass turned the ball over to Keyser.
Rodeheaver went 39 yards on the next play, and, even though Morales missed the extra point, Keyser suddenly had a two-possession lead with 5:33 left.
The Bison drove across midfield on their next possession, but Spaid was intercepted by Amonte Turner with 4:25 left, and Keyser ran out the clock from there.
Clearfield (0-1) travels to Penns Valley on Friday.
