Clearfield Post 6 Legion upended by DuBois, 13-2
Thursday, July 10, 2014

By Jaclyn Yingling Sports Editor
LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP - DuBois pounded out 15 hits, including two homers, in a 13-2 victory over Clearfield in Central Penn League American Legion baseball action at the Lawrence Township Rec Park on Wednesday.
Both Jake Miknis and Dom Goldbach hit three-run homers, while five different Post 17 players had two or more hits.
"They earned their runs tonight," said Post 6 head coach Sid Lansberry. "We didn't have errors and we didn't make mistakes, they just hit the ball. We have to give them credit for that.
"Those two home runs were the big blows, and it's hard to come back from that."
Clearfield managed just four hits in the game, which saw five different DuBois pitchers on the mound.
Chiefs starter Jon Janocko went just two-plus innings. He allowed eight runs on seven hits and three walks. He was replaced by Will Myers, who pitched 2 1/3 innings.
Myers allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in his first CPL action on the mound. He eventually made way for Josh Kennedy, who finished out the game and allowed the last two runs.
"I think Will did a nice job in relief," Lansberry said. "It was his first time pitching in this league, and I think he did a good job.
"They both did fine. They haven't pitched very much, but they both came in and did a nice job."
DuBois took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Dylan McKee walked before being plated by Clayton Read.
The Chiefs got the run back in the bottom half of the inning, as Sawyer Rowles singled and came around on a single from Janocko.
Post 17 scored four runs in the top of the second, with three coming on Miknis' homer over the center-field wall.
Clearfield loaded the bases against DuBois starter Noah Schneider.
But Schneider got a strikeout, a popup and a groundout to end the inning.
DuBois increased its lead to 8-1 in the top of the third, as Goldbach hit a shot over the left-field fence to chase Janocko from the game.
Post 17 scored its fourth run of the frame after doubles from Colin Read and Miknis to put the score at 9-1.
DuBois added two more runs in the fifth on an RBI single from McKee and a sacrifice fly by Jake Felix, widening the lead to 11-1.
The Chiefs added their final run of the game in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of an error in the infield.
Rowles hit a ball to third, then hustled down to the base as Justin Sleigh overthrew Felix.
Spencer Herrington drew a walk before Janocko singled to bring in Rowles and keep the game alive for one more inning.
Post 17 tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth before Clayton Read shut down the Chiefs to set the final. DuBois turned a double play in the frame, while Read struck out the next batter to end the game.
"This was kind of a game that didn't mean a whole lot going into playoffs (on Friday)," Lansberry said. "It meant more to them because they are close to the top.
"It's based on the number of wins, and I think that there are a few other teams that have played more games and have more wins."
Clearfield dropped to 9-11 overall and 7-9 in the CPL. The Chiefs play at DuBois on Friday in the opening round of the league's playoffs.
