HYDE - It just seemed that it wasn't the night for the Clearfield American Legion baseball team on Wednesday.
Being short on the pitching staff, the Chiefs hung on for a tie game after two innings before Mifflin County knocked in seven runs in the top of the third. That was more than enough as Post 6 fell, 13-1, in five innings at the Bison Sports Complex.
"We were a little short on arms today, but they're a really good team," said Clearfield head coach Sid Lansberry. "Their whole lineup could hit the ball."
The teams traded a run each in the first inning, with both earning a key hit for extra bases in the frame. On the second batter of the game, Mifflin County's Max Remy tripled to right field against Chiefs starter Spencer Herrington. Lucas McKay ripped a 2-out single to left field to score Remy for the contest's first run.
Post 6 responded in the bottom of the first inning with two outs. Curtis Collins singled and swiped second base before Cole Kephart had the only RBI of the night. Kephart hammered a 2-2 pitch off the top of the wall down the left field fine, hitting the ‘318' sign to score Collins from second base.
That was the only run Clearfield could manage off of Mifflin County pitcher Ross Torquato, as they only earned one more hit - a Josh Kennedy single in the fifth inning.
Torquato gave up an earned run on three hits, while walking two and striking out four. He also had a streak of nine straight batters retired in the game.
Mifflin County left the bases loaded in the second inning before piling on seven runs in the third on five hits. Hunter Walker and Heath Hidlay each had a 2-run double in the frame, while Isaac Strohecker, Drew Hannon and Jacob Larson each had a RBI single to help Mifflin County build an 8-1 lead.
Herrington went 2 1/3 innings and gave up four earned runs on seven hits. Sawyer Rowles took over for Herrington and gave up four runs - none of them earned - on three hits.
Josh Kennedy pitched the last 1 2/3 innings, allowing a couple of earned runs on two hits.
Mifflin County added three more runs in the fourth inning, and two in the fifth inning. All three were unearned in the fourth, with the only hit in the frame coming on a single from Carter Spade.
Max Remy drove in Walker with a double in the fifth inning, and later came home on an Andrew Larson groundout to set the final.
Clearfield dropped to 1-4 and hosts Altoona this evening.
