HYDE - Another game. Another league. Another one-run loss for Clearfield.
The Clearfield Post 6 American Legion team fell to visiting Beech Creek, 4-3, on Wednesday evening at the Bison Sports Complex.
It was the eighth such loss for head coach Sid Lansberry and the several members of the Chiefs who also play on the varsity high school team.
"I don't know there is just something about this team and one-run games," Lansberry said. "But, Beech Creek is a good team. We just have to start winning some of these one-run games."
Despite falling behind 4-1, the Chiefs cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth and had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.
But pinch runner Jake Sorbera was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
Clearfield starter Brandon Orsich went all seven innings, allowing seven hits, one walk and just two earned runs.
Post 6 had five errors in the game, two of which led to the first two runs for the Crickets, who defeated Philipsburg on Monday.
The Chiefs were able to work out of a jam in the first, as Beech Creek's Chuck Probst reached on an error with two outs. After a wild pitch, Orsich struck out a batter to end the inning.
In the second, Post 6 turned a 6-4-3 double play.
But in the third, back-to-back errors helped the Crickets push two runners across the plate. Both errors came with one out. An RBI single from Cole Hanley and a fielder's choice by Probst each scored a run.
Clearfield got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to two errors by Beech Creek.
Sawyer Rowles reached on a single, then moved to second on an error by Probst. Zach Timchak hit a ball that was bobbled, allowing Rowles to score.
Crickets starter Toner Corl got a groundout and a flyout to end the threat.
Beech Creek tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth, and both runs came with two outs.
Trapper Kunes drew a walk and stole second before Cole Hanley singled. Hanley then stole second before Probst stepped up to the plate and doubled both runners home.
Probst moved to third on a wild pitch, but Orsich was able to get Caleb Seyler to fly out to right to end the frame.
The Chiefs scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, with one coming on an error.
Spencer Herrington reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a triple by Curtis Collins. Collins slid safely into third ahead of Probst's relay throw, which skipped past the third baseman and out of play, allowing Collins to score.
The Chiefs had a chance to tie the game in the seventh, as Logan Lykens got things started with a walk. Probst, who came in to relieve Corl to start the inning, struck out the next batter.
Logan Puit then got a free pass before Probst struck out another batter. A single by Collins into deep center gave Lykens' pinch runner Sorbera a chance to score, but a perfect throw from the relay to catcher Ethan McGill ended the game and set the final at 4-3.
"Orsich pitched a solid, efficient game," said Lansberry. "It was another good outing for him.
"We made some mistakes early and gave them some runs. Other than that, it was a very good ballgame."
Collins went 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI and a run scored to lead Clearfield.
Post 6 dipped to 1-1 and travels to Clarence this evening.
