Denny's Beer Barrel Pub topples Rossiter in Fed League action
Wednesday, May 21, 2014
By Andy Stine Sports Writer HYDE - After falling in their first game on Sunday while putting together just three hits, the Denny's Beer Barrel Pub Federation League baseball team had a much easier time putting the bat on the ball in its home opener.
Denny's put together 12 hits on Tuesday evening, while Mike Moyer and Adam Jury combined for one earned run and 11 strikeouts to defeat Rossiter, 8-2, at the Bison Sports Complex.
"It was good to see us hit the ball after we didn't hit the ball very well on Sunday," said Denny's third baseman Thomas Yeager.
"It was nice to see Moyer come back after six months off and throw the ball really well. Jury threw the ball well. He pitched a perfect seventh, and he's going to get to do that a lot for us this year."
Despite leaving the bases loaded in the first inning, Denny's still drove in two runs before the Miners recorded their first out.
Sam Gardner led off with a walk, while Derek Danver singled to center field.
Jury drove in Gardner on a line drive to right field, and Danver came in on a Bart McGary base hit.
After a bloop base hit from Yeager, Rossiter starting pitcher Christian Muth struck out the side to end the inning.
The Miners brought a run home in the second inning.
Rick Bishop walked and moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch.
With two outs, Adam Cressman reached on an error on the Denny's second baseman, allowing Bishop to score.
Denny's pushed across a run each in the second, third and fourth innings with all three coming via the sacrifice fly. Gardner singled in the second inning and moved up to third on a pair of wild pitches before coming home on a Danver sacrifice fly.
Yeager brought in McGary in the third inning on a sac fly to center field, while Danver plated a second run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to make the score 5-1. This time, Brett Sutika scored on the play after reaching on a base hit.
The Miners scored their last run of the game in the top of the fifth inning.
Jacob Stumpf doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. On the next batter, Jordan Mesoraco grounded out to first, allowing Stumpf to trot home.
After Bishop threw a scoreless fifth inning in relief for Rossiter, Denny's plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off Cressman.
Jury brought home Chad Zurat on an infield single, while Yeager drove in Jury on a double to left field. It was the only extra-base hit for Denny's on the evening.
Danver also scored earlier in the inning on an error to set the final.
Moyer earned the win on the mound, as he gave up an earned run on four hits, while striking out nine. Jury struck out two in a perfect seventh inning to close out the game.
