P-O discusses teacher absences
Wednesday, October 23, 2013
By Tyler Kolesar Staff Writer
PHILIPSBURG - Questions arose over professional development days at last night's brief Philipsburg-Osceola School Board meeting. Board member Elizabeth Whitehead said she was "amazed" at the number of teachers out per day and was concerned about finding enough substitutes. Superintendent Gregg Paladina said most of the professional development days scheduled are paid for through the Keystones to Opportunity Grant the school has received, while others are state mandated.
To try to alleviate this problem, they have also looked into having certain training sessions after hours if they are able to do so. Paladina also said the training is spread out over about a month and a half. After some deliberation, the motion was made to accept all the development trips by a 7-1 vote. Voting yes were Whitehead, President Becky Timchak, Todd Jeffries, Linda Bush, Mary Ellen Holden, Nancy Lamb and Susan McGee. Jim Verbeck cast the lone dissenting vote, while Dana Droll was absent.
The board also approved the following:
l advertising to hire a part time music teacher at the request of Paladina. Paladina said the position would be for middle and high school students, in which the person would help kids with their music lessons.
l numerous extra curricular positions.
l all department chairpersons.
l the resignation of Dawn Dishart Yarko for retirement purposes effective Sept. 6 and to approve a memorandum of understanding between the Philipsburg-Osceola Education Association and the district regarding the resignation for retirement purposes.
l advertising for a secondary Spanish teacher position.
l hiring Nicole Anderson as a Special Education Assistant (at 5.75 hours) at Philipsburg Elementary effective Oct. 9.
l retroactive three-day suspension of a district employee, without pay, from Oct. 22-24.
l an extended sick leave for a district employee from Jan. 16-31, 2014 with the use of accumulated sick and personal days.
The next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at Philipsburg Elementary. Unlike most months, November's meeting is a combined committee/ voting meeting.
