Jack Soult boots four goals to lift Bison

By Andy Stine Sports Writer
HYDE - If there was ever a time the Clearfield boys soccer team had to prove that it was never out of a game, Thursday evening was the time.
Down 4-1 late in the first half, the Bison scored once before a wild second half that sent the two teams to overtime. After one scoreless 10-minute period, Bison midfielder Jack Soult launched a direct kick from the 28-yard line into the goal to end the game and give Clearfield a 6-5 win over Huntingdon.
"Both teams played their hearts out," said Clearfield head coach Todd Trinidad. "Huntingdon played really well. They came out and they played with heart. We came out and we matched their intensity, and I think we played a little better. It was a beautiful game."
Bison goalkeeper Keith Biancuzzo made a pair of big saves just two minutes into the game, but the Bearcats struck shortly after.
Huntingdon striker Matt Wilson was tripped up in front of the Clearfield net on a shot attempt, resulting in a penalty kick. Wilson made the penalty shot for the first goal of the game at the 6:27 mark.
Just 45 seconds later, Wilson converted on his second goal. Biancuzzo came out of the net to make a play on the ball, but Wilson took control of the ball and dribbled past the keeper to give his team a 2-0 lead.
Spencer Herrington put the first goal on the board for Clearfield in the 10th minute on a direct kick from the 40-yard line that sailed just over the Bearcat goalkeeper to cut Huntingdon's deficit in half.
Wilson picked up a hat trick at 21:26 on his second penalty kick goal of the night.
Almost 10 minutes later, Bearcat midfielder Seth Greenfield received a pass downfield and had a shot attempt blocked by Biancuzzo. Greenfield got the rebound off the block and drilled the ball into the net on his second attempt to give Huntingdon a 4-1 lead.
Soult put in his first goal of the game on an assist from Zach Fox at 34:35 to put the game at 4-2 at halftime.
"Our team showed tremendous heart tonight," said Trinidad. "They knew they were playing well. We had a few decisions that went the wrong way, but we knew we were playing harder than them. We gave a little talk to them (at halftime) and we let them know that they were still in the game. They came out and just did an incredible job.
"This whole game was up and down. I knew our guys could do it, and our team captains and a lot of other guys stepped up and kept the spirits up."
Just 1:15 into the second half, Jared Williams put his team within striking distance with a score at the far post. Herrington nearly tied the game moments later with a direct kick that went off the crossbar.
The game remained at 4-3 until just under the 10-minute mark where Soult earned his second goal of the game on a shot from nearly 30 yards out to tie the match. Fox earned his second assist of the game on the play.
Soult gave Clearfield its first lead of the contest just over a minute later on a penalty kick, beating the Bearcat goalkeeper to the left side of the goal for a 5-4 lead.
Greenfield tacked on the last Bearcat goal with just under five minutes to play in regulation. Midfielder Ryan Shelley dribbled past several Bison defenders and saw Greenfield across the field, streaking to the goal. Shelley's cross was on the mark to Greenfield for the tie.
In the first overtime, Clearfield got off a couple shot opportunities, but Huntingdon goalie Kody Heaton scooped up every attempt.
In the second overtime, Huntingdon created more offense for itself, but couldn't get the ball past Biancuzzo for the golden goal. But on a direct kick at 94:54, Soult's boot from the 28-yard line was drilled into the right side of the goal for the win.
Soult had four goals on seven shots, while Herrington also scored. Fox added two assists, and Aaron Angstadt helped on Williams' goal.
"Jack and Spencer are just amazing," said Trinidad. "Those two guys can control the midfield and control the play of the game. They have incredible talent. Jack with four goals in one game, that's amazing. But it was a great team effort. They all did an excellent job."
Clearfield improved to 1-1 and travels to Bald Eagle Area on Monday.
Huntingdon topped the Bison in the junior varsity game, 3-0.
