Pettina sentenced to probation and house arrest
Wednesday, July 10, 2013
BELLEFONTE - After pleading guilty in April, Vickie Pettina, 59, was sentenced on Friday before the Honorable Bradley P. Lunsford for embezzling more than $73,000 in funds from Jaro Corporation in Philipsburg.
Pettina was the bookkeeper for Jaro Corporation for several years. In 2009, the owner of the company suspected that Pettina had been embezzling funds from the business and asked her to turn over the books and records.
At first, she only provided a portion of the records, but eventually complied in 2010 when she provided the information to the accountant. Additional banking records were obtained from M&T Bank and they revealed a four-year time period beginning in 2005 in which Pettina was siphoning money for her own personal use and altering the books to appear legitimate.
Pettina would record in the ledger that she was writing a check in payment for a particular business-related expense, however, upon further review, the checks were actually written to Pettina, her relatives, or to cash.
Pettina was sentenced to serve seven years of probation, with the first nine months on house arrest.
The commonwealth had asked for a minimum sentence of six months incarceration, pointing out cases with similar circumstances in which others have gone to jail.
