Henry named Dairy Maid
Monday, April 22, 2013
By Dianne Byers Staff Writer
CURWENSVILLE - Kyra Henry is the newest ambassador for the dairy industry. Kyra, 8, the daughter of Shannon and Michael Henry of Curwensville was crowned the 2013-14 Clearfield County Dairy Maid Saturday night at an ice cream social held at the Curwensville Community Center. Both her father and grandfathers are dairy farmers.
Shannon Henry, Kyra's mother and a member of the Clearfield County Dairy Princess Promotion Committee, told the approximately 25 people in attendance, the program had to be moved from its previous June timeframe during National Dairy Month to meet new state requirements that mandate it be held before June 1.
Kyra is a third grade student at Curwensville Area Elementary School. She is a member of the Clearfield County 4-H Livestock Club and has shown dairy cows at the Clearfield County Fair since she was 4-years-old. She attends Community Baptist Church, Curwensville and according to her biography enjoys baton twirling, riding bicycles, showing cows and going to the barn.
She told a story she had written about Molly the Milk Jug as she explored the journey of milk from the cow to the glass.
Kyra said she was proud to be a farmer's daughter and have an opportunity to tell people about the importance of consuming dairy products especially milk and the hard work dairy farmers do daily to provide milk for the public.
Rachel Hicks, the 2010-11 Clearfield County Dairy Princess and a member of the Clearfield County Dairy Promotion Committee, served as mistress of ceremonies for the event.
Other members of the committee are: Dawn Sankey, Joan Curry, Mary Ann Way, Colleen Bakaysa, Michelle Carns and Darla Smay.
Contributors to Saturday's social are Dr. and Mrs. Fred Ralston, Orner Farms Inc., Henry Farms, Lois and Joe Wriglesworth, Curry's Dairy Farm, SankeyCrest Farm, Clearfield Pharmacy, Black Walnut Farms, Bakaysa Beef Farms and Michael and Shannon Henry.
For additional information about scheduling an appearance by the dairy made contact Shannon Henry at 236-3150.
