Weekend Events is a weekly feature of The Progress published to alert readers about events planned by nonprofit organizations or events that benefit the community. All events are open to the public. The following events are planned this weekend in Progressland.
Art shows
Susquehanna River Art Center opened a new art exhibit at Clearfield Hospital through May 18. Many of the paintings and photography are for sale. A percentage of the sold artwork is donated to Clearfield Hospital Auxiliary. The exhibit is under the direction of Karen Neeper, a member of the SRAC Art Club, and assisted by the show committee. Applications for club membership are available at Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library, Clearfield.
Clearfield Area High School Art Show is on display at Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library, Clearfield, through May 4 during the library's operating hours. This event is sponsored by Susquehanna River Art Center. There are 109 paintings and three-dimensional art works on display.

Free bread, clothing
God's Clear View Ministries, 1946 Pardee Road, (the Old Morris School), Morrisdale, will distribute free bread and will open the Blessing Shop with free clothing and households items for struggling families this weekend. For more information, call 496-9847.

Ballroom dance
A ballroom dance will be held at Clearfield YMCA Friday from 6-9 p.m. Admission is $5.
Bring your own soft drinks and a contribution for the refreshment table.

Wings and things
Mahaffey Fire Co. will host a Wings and Things event Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the fire hall. Fish and chips and boneless wings will be offered, as well as nine flavors of wing sauce.

Mahaffey Fire Co. will host an auction with auctioneer Keith Byers. Doors and kitchen open at 4 p.m. with the auction to follow at 5 p.m. For more information, call 277-6639.

Bake sale
Morrisdale United Methodist Church will hold a bake sale Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Proceeds benefit Kierstene Smeal, for her People to People Ambassador trip.

Benefit dance
Curwensville Business and Professional Women will host its annual benefit dance, "Dance Into Spring," Saturday from 9 p.m. to midnight at The Smokehouse, Curwensville. Music will be provided by The Moore Brothers. Tickets are $10 each. There will be a cash bar, 50/50 and raffle tickets will be sold throughout the evening. Proceeds benefit CBPW's high school scholarship fund.

Concession stand open
The concession stand at Curly Hurd Memorial Park will be open Saturday and Sunday. Breakfast will be served from 6-8:30 a.m. Sandwiches, drinks and snacks will be sold until dusk each day. Proceeds benefit improvements at the park.

Easter bone hunt
The 2013 Mountain Laurel Kennel Club Easter Bone Hunt will be held Saturday at the Clearfield Driving Park. Registration is at 12:30 p.m. and the hunt begins at 1 p.m. The cost is $2 per dog. Rain date is Sunday. There will be prizes, a Chinese auction, 50/50, photos with the Easter bunny and more. Proceeds go to the kennel club and are used to help with its education and outreach efforts.

Fisherman's breakfast
A fisherman's breakfast will be held Saturday from 5-8 p.m. at Westover firehall. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, biscuits and a drink. Also, a craft/antique show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a bake sale, Chinese auction, and the kitchen will be open. For more information, call Judy at 381-0086.

Free spring shopping day
A free spring shopping day will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Osceola Mills United Methodist Church. There will be new and used items for men, women and children, including clothes, household items and decorations and everything is free.

Night of music
Trinity United Methodist Church, 121 S. Second St. Clearfield, will present Raise the Roof - A Night of Music Saturday at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary. A $6 donation will be accepted.
Many area residents will present a variety of music including on organ, piano, instrumental as well as vocal numbers. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information or tickets, call 765-9222 or visit

Pancake and sausage breakfast
A pancake and sausage breakfast to benefit the Grampian Lions Club's Relay For Life team will be held Saturday from 6-11 a.m. at Heritage Hall, Grampian. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children age 10 and younger. There will also be a bake sale.

Park cleanup
On Saturday, volunteers are needed to clean up at Irvin Park in Curwensville. This event is sponsored by the Curwensville Revitalization Team. Anyone able to help should meet at 9 a.m. at the park's bandshell.

Rabies clinics
Grampian-Penn-Bloom Fire Co. is sponsoring a rabies clinic Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon at Grampian firehall. The cost is $10 per shot. The event will be held regardless of the weather.
A rabies clinic is being held Saturday from 1:30-3 p.m. at LeContes Mills firehall. Administering the vaccines is Dr. Herring and Dr. Erin DeSantis. They will give either a one- or three-year shot. Those attending should bring last year's tag and paperwork. The cost is $10.

Shoe banks
Trinity United Methodist Church, 121 S. Front St., Philipsburg, will hold the Philipsburg-Osceola Shoe Bank Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. Children may receive a new pair of sneakers for free with an Access or CHIP card. The child must be present to be measured and receive the shoes. Children can receive a pair of sneakers every six months; children younger than age 3 will receive a new pair every three months. A community shoe bank of the Ramey area, serving children in Moshannon Valley and Glendale school districts, will be held Saturday from 9-11 a.m. in the Ramey United Methodist Church social room. In case of inclement weather, it will be closed. Call the church office during storms before coming. Children ages 3-18 may visit every six months, while children from newborns to age 2 may visit every three months. Children must be present and accompanied by a parent or guardian and must show their current Access or CHIP card.
Gently used shoes are also available for everyone. For more information, call the church office at 378-5186.

Spaghetti dinner
Boy Scout Troop No. 44 of Philipsburg will have a spaghetti dinner, yard sale and bake sale Saturday. The dinner is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church parish hall, 400 S. Fourth St., Philipsburg. Prices are $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 5-10 and free for children 4 and younger. Meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, roll and dessert for dine-in or takeout. The yard sale will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the bake sale will run from 8 a.m. to noon. Proceeds will help send Scouts to a weeklong summer camp at Camp Mountain Run, Penfield.

Clearfield B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 540 will have a family breakfast Sunday from 8-10 a.m. at the Elks Lodge, 301 N. Second St., Clearfield. The menu includes ham, eggs, homefries, toast, orange juice and coffee. The cost is $5. Proceeds benefit Elks charities.
Frenchville Veterans of Foreign Wars Leigey Renaud Post No. 8386 will serve breakfast Sunday from 8-11 a.m. The menu includes ham or bacon and eggs, sausage gravy, fries, toast, juice and coffee. Prices are $5 for adults and $4 for children younger than 12. This will be the last breakfast until after Labor Day.

A stuffed pork chop dinner will be held Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mountain Top Fire Station, Sandy Ridge. The menu includes stuffed pork chop, potatoes and gravy, vegetable, roll and dessert. Prices are $8 for adults, $4 for children and free for children younger than 3. Takeouts are available, and the meal is all-you-can-eat when eating in.

Paddle party
A paddle party/quarter auction to benefit Susquehanna Community Grange will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Curwensville Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 268. The first paddle is $3 and additional paddles are $1. There will be door prizes. Those attending are asked to bring their quarters. Doors open at 2 p.m. There will be new vendors, and the kitchen will be open.

Shotgun shoot
West Decatur Sportsmen's Club will hold a .22/shotgun shoot Sunday, with registration at noon. For more information, call Mike at 761-1526.

Trap Shoot
Glen Richey Sportsman will hold a trap shoot Sunday at 2 p.m. at the club house. The cost is $5 per round. Anyone who hits the white birdy will get a free round.
