Weekend Events Thursday, March 14, 2013 Weekend Events is a weekly feature of The Progress published to alert readers about events planned by nonprofit organizations or events that benefit the community. All events are open to the public. The following events are planned this weekend in Progressland.
Thursday Art shows An art sale featuring the paintings of the late William Patton Brown is going on now through April 4 at Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library, Clearfield. The sale is open to the public during the library's operating hours. This event will benefit the Susquehanna River Art Center and the library. The sale is under the direction of Dottie Evans Crissman and assisted by Steve Albert, club president; Gloria Rowles, club vice president; and Steve Hindman. For more information, call Crissman at 765-5621. --- Susquehanna River Art Center is exhibiting members' artwork at the Clearfield Hospital, first floor, through Friday. Some of the artwork is for sale and a percentage of sold artwork is donated to the Clearfield Hospital Auxiliary. Karen Neeper, SRAC member, is the organizer and is assisted by the club's show committee. Membership applications for the SRAC art club are available at Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library in Clearfield.
Comedy The comedy "The Little Theatre's Production of Hamlet" will be presented at the Clearfield Arts Studio Theatre building, 112 E. Locust St., Clearfield, Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8.50 at the door.
Friday Fish dinners Blain City Veterans of Foreign Wars Richard L. Beers Post No. 7043 Ladies Auxiliary will serve Lenten fish dinners Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the post home. The price is $7, with eat-in or takeouts available. --- St. Severin's Church, Drifting, will serve a fish dinner Friday from 4-6:30 p.m. at the social hall. Prices are $9 for adults and $6 for a small portion. The menu includes baked or fried fish, parslied potatoes, vegetable, coleslaw or applesauce, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, roll, dessert and beverage. Eat-in or takeouts are available. Call 345-6665 for takeouts. --- Columbia Fire Co., Osceola Mills, will serve a Lenten fish dinner Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the firehall. Prices are $10 for adults and $6.50 for children. The menu includes a choice of fried or baked fish, potato, macaroni and cheese, vegetable, stewed tomatoes, and a full salad bar and two soups for eat-in only. Takeouts and deliveries are available. Call 339-5046 for deliveries. --- Hyde Fire Co. will serve a fish dinner Friday from 3:30-7 p.m. at the social hall. The menu includes baked or fried haddock with a choice of french fries or macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, roll and fruit. Prices are $8 for adults and $4 for children. Takeouts are available. Free local deliveries can be made by calling 768-9407. --- Ramey Fire Co. will serve a Lenten fish dinner on Friday from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at the firehall. The menu includes a choice of baked or fried fish, chicken planks are also available, with potato, vegetables, stewed tomatoes and macaroni and cheese, served with soup and salad bar for eat-in only. Prices are $9 for adults and $6 for children younger than 12. Takeouts are available. Proceeds benefit the fire company. --- Lenten dinners will be served Friday from 4-6:30 p.m. at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, Curwensville. Adult baked or deep-fried fish dinners are available at a cost of $8.50 each, and fried shrimp or crab cake meals are $9 each. Children's dinners are $4 each. Meals may be eaten in or taken out. Tickets are sold at the door.
Wings and things Mahaffey Fire Department will hold its wings and things event Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the firehall. Eat in or takeouts available. To place orders so they will be ready when you come to pick them up, call 277-6639.
Saturday Chicken barbecue A chicken barbecue will be held Saturday from noon until sold out at the Karthaus firehall. The price for the meal is $8 and includes half a chicken, baked beans, macaroni salad, roll and choice of dessert. Proceeds benefit Karthaus Volunteer Fire Co.
Chicken and waffles Mahaffey Fire Department will hold an all-you-can-eat chicken and waffle meal Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the firehall. The cost is $5 and the meal includes chicken and waffles, drinks and cookies. Takeouts are available. Proceeds benefit the fire company.
Dinner/dance A St. Patrick's Day dinner-dance will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at Houtzdale American Legion Freeberg Post No. 591. Music will be provided by the Moore Brothers. Tickets are available at the door. The cost is $8 per person.
Easter bazaar Allemansville United Methodist Church will hold its 18th annual Easter bazaar Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be crafts, baked goods, homemade noodles, Easter candy, and soups and sandwiches for eat-in or takeout. An Easter egg hunt will be held at 11 a.m. for children 12 and younger. Register in the church basement.
Sneaker closet The Sneaker Closet at Trinity United Methodist Church, Clearfield, will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. Children from birth through 18 years can receive a new pair of sneakers, a new pair of socks, a stuffed animal and a book. There will also be gloves, winter hats, scarves and a selection of boots while supplies last. Children must have their Access medical card, be accompanied by a parent or guardian and be present to receive sneakers and boots. For more information, call the church office at 765-9222.
Spaghetti dinners A spaghetti dinner will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, West Decatur, Saturday from 4:30-7 p.m. The meal will be available for dine-in or takeout. Prices are $6 for adults and $3 for children younger than 10. --- A spaghetti dinner will be held Saturday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 121 S. Second St., Clearfield. Dinner includes spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and a beverage. Prices are $6.50 for adults and $4.50 for children younger than 12. Takeouts will also be available. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling the church office at 765-9222. --- A benefit spaghetti dinner will be held Saturday from 4-7:30 p.m. at the Mahaffey firehall. Funds raised will be used to help the family of Christopher Brandner pay his funeral expenses. Brandner, 28, was found dead Feb. 8 in a vacant lot in Glen Campbell. A dance will be held following the dinner. Advance tickets for the spaghetti dinner and dance are $7 each for adults; $5 for children ages 6-12; and free for children 5 and younger. Adult tickets will be $9 at the door. Meals may be eaten in or taken out. Sunday Auction/dinner An auction will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Westover Fire Co., 583 W. Bridge St., Westover. There will be frozen food, dry goods, paper products, snacks and miscellaneous items. Auctioneer is Charlie Fisher. For more information, call Roger or Judy at 381-0096. Also, a baked chicken dinner will be held at the firehall Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The menu includes homemade scalloped potatoes, corn, roll, dessert and drink. Prices are $8 for adults and $4 for children younger than 10. Regular kitchen menu items will also be available. Takeouts are available by calling 247-8641.
Breakfast Clearfield Veterans of Foreign Wars F. Michael Sicks Post No. 1785 will serve breakfast Sunday from 7-10 a.m. at the post home. The cost is $5.
Craft fair A spring craft fair for Relay For Life will be held Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Moshannon Valley YMCA, Philipsburg. There will be crafts, a bake sale, concession stand and raffles.
Pancake and sausage breakfast A pancake and sausage breakfast will be served Sunday from 8-11 a.m. at Frenchville Veterans of Foreign Wars Leigey Renaud Post No. 8386. The menu includes pancakes and sausage, juice and coffee. Prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12.
Paddle auction A paddle auction will be held Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at West Branch Elementary School. Doors open at 1 p.m. The cost is $3 for the first paddle and $1 for each addition. Proceeds benefit the West Branch Warriors Wrestling program.
Paddle party Gearhartville Sportsmen's Club will host a paddle party at the club Sunday at 2 p.m., with doors opening at 1 p.m. Donation is $3 for the first paddle. There will also be door prizes and refreshments.
St. Patrick's Day dinners Glendale Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual St. Patrick's Day dinner Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at the firehall, located along Water Street in Coalport. This is the 58th year for the annual tradition for the fire department, which is scheduled for the Sunday closest to St. Patrick's Day. The meal includes a choice of ham or turkey with all the trimmings. Prices are $8 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 6-12 and free for children younger than 6. Tickets are available at the door, and takeouts are available. A raffle is also scheduled for the day. --- A St. Patrick's Day dinner will be held Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Hyde Fire Co. social hall. The Irish dinner consists of corned beef and cabbage with parsley potatoes, roll, drink and dessert. Prices are $8 for adults and $4 for children. The children's meal can be substituted with chicken planks and fries. Takeouts are available, and free local deliveries can be made by calling 768-9407.
Shotgun shoot Glendale Sportsmen's Club will hold a shotgun shoot Sunday at 2 p.m. at the clubhouse, 2732 Black Elk Road, Irvona. The cost is $15 for 10 rounds, and the club will furnish the shells. --- To have an event included, submit the information in writing to any office of The Progress by noon Tuesday. Late submissions will not be published, nor will submissions that do not include a contact person and daytime telephone number. The Progress does not include bingo, club events that are limited to members and guests only, or yard sales or flea markets by private individuals in the Weekend Events section.
