Weekend Events Thursday, February 28, 2013 Weekend Events is a weekly feature of The Progress published to alert readers about events planned by nonprofit organizations or events that benefit the community. All events are open to the public. The following events are planned this weekend in Progressland.
Thursday Art shows Sherry Appleton is exhibiting her artwork at Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library through Friday. Appleton is a member of the Susquehanna River Art Center, which is a sponsor of this event. The artist showcases give member artists an opportunity to exhibit their artwork for a month at the library. A percentage of any painting sold is donated to the library. Appleton instructs pastel classes at the Clearfield Center for Active Living in Clearfield. She can be contacted by calling 791-4472. The March showcase will feature a sale of the late William Patton Brown's paintings. --- Susquehanna River Art Center is exhibiting members' artwork at Clearfield Hospital, first floor, through March 15. Some of the artwork is for sale and a percentage of sold artwork is donated to the Clearfield Hospital auxiliary. This show features many themes and mediums such as acrylic, watercolor, pastels and oils. Karen Neeper, SRAC member, is the organizer of the hospital show and assisted by the club's show committee. Membership applications for the SRAC Art Club are available at Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library, Clearfield.
School musicals Curwensville Area High School students will perform the musical "Lucky Stiff" Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. Leslie D. Leach Auditorium at the high school. Tickets are $8 each and available by calling the high school office during business hours at 236-1100 or at the door. --- Purchase Line Music Theatre presents "Guys and Dolls" at Purchase Line High School auditorium Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $5 each at the door.
Friday Fish dinners A Lenten fish dinner will be served Friday from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at Ramey Fire Co. at the firehall. The menu includes a choice of baked or fried fish, chicken planks also available, with potato, vegetables, stewed tomatoes and macaroni and cheese. It is served with soup and salad bar for eat-in only. Prices are $9 for adults and $6 for children younger than 12. Takeouts are available. Proceeds benefit the fire company. --- A fish dinner will be held Friday from 3:30-7 p.m. at the Hyde Fire Co. social hall. The menu includes baked or fried haddock with a choice of french fries or macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, roll and fruit. Prices are $8 for adults and $4 for children. Takeouts are available. Free local deliveries can be made by calling 768-9407. --- Columbia Fire Co., Osceola Mills, will serve a Lenten fish dinner Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the firehall. Prices are $10 for adults and $6.50 for children. The menu includes a choice of fried or baked fish, potato, macaroni and cheese, vegetable, stewed tomatoes, and a full salad bar and two soups for eat-in only. Takeouts and deliveries are available by calling 339-5046. --- St. Severin's Catholic Church, Drifting, is holding a fish dinner Friday from 4-6:30 p.m. at the social hall. Prices are $9 for adult and $6 for a small portion. The menu includes baked or fried fish, parslied potatoes, vegetable, coleslaw or applesauce, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, roll, dessert and beverage for eat-in or takeout. Call 345-6665 for takeouts. --- Blain City Veterans of Foreign Wars Richard L. Beers Post No. 7043 Ladies Auxiliary is serving Lenten fish dinners Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the post home. Price is $7 per meal and eat-in or takeouts are available. The public is welcome to attend. --- Lenten dinners will be served Friday from 4-6:30 p.m. at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church's social hall, 306 Walnut St., Curwensville. The cost for baked or deep-fried fish dinners is $8 for adults and fried shrimp or crab cakes dinners, $9 for adults. All children's meals are $4. Tickets will be sold at the door. Meals may be eaten in or taken out.
Rummage/soup sale A rummage/soup sale will be held Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Salvation Army, 119 Byers St., Clearfield. There will be toys, clothes, baby items, knickknacks, and much more available. Homemade soup will be sold at $4 a quart. Available soups include turkey noodle, chili and potato.
Saturday Benefit dinner A benefit dinner to help the people who lost their homes, jobs and businesses in the Third Street fire will be held Saturday at the Expo II Building in the Clearfield Driving Park. Doors open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 5:30 p.m. There will be live bands playing throughout the night, as well as a Chinese auction. Prices are $15 before the event and $20 at the door. Book sale Friends of Holt Memorial Library, Philipsburg, is having its monthly book sale Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the downstairs of the library. Hardback books are $1 and most paperbacks are 25 cents. There are new selections from which to choose.
Breakfast Cooper Township Sportsmen's Club will hold its last breakfast Saturday from 7-11 a.m. at the club. Prices are $7 for adults and $5 for children. The menu includes bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, toast, juice, home fries and coffee. Corn is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost is $5 per bag and those participating must have a membership card. There is a one-bag limit.
Country for a Cure Country for a Cure, featuring Randy Clark and the Renegade Ride and Fred Meyers and the Redneck Majority, will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Smokehouse in Curwensville. Proceeds to go to cancer research in honor of Jean Hipps. There is a $5 cover charge.
Pancake/sausage breakfast A pancake/sausage breakfast, sponsored by the VVA for Beverly Seger at the Grampian Heritage Hall, will be served Saturday from 6-11 a.m. The price is $6 for adults.
Skating event The Northern Allegheny Roller Derby girls will appear and skate with the public at Edgewood Family Fun Center, DuBois, Saturday from 7:30-10:30 p.m. There will be 80s-themed music, and participants may dress the part if they wish. A Chinese auction, bake sale and other events will be held. Cost to get in is $5 plus $1 skate rental - same rates as regular open skate. Items or cash donations for The Gateway Humane Society and Willow Run Sanctuary for Animals will also be accepted during this event.
Sneaker closet The Sneaker Closet at Trinity United Methodist Church, Clearfield, will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. Children from birth through 18 years can receive a new pair of sneakers, a new pair of socks, a stuffed animal and a book. There will also be gloves, winter hats, scarves and a selection of boots, while supplies last. Children must have their Access medical card, be accompanied by a parent or guardian and be present to receive sneakers and boots. In case of inclement weather, the event will be canceled. Sunday Breakfasts Clearfield Veterans of Foreign Wars F. Michael Sicks Post No. 1785 will serve a breakfast Sunday from 7-10 a.m. at the post home. The cost is $5. --- Frenchville Veterans of Foreign Wars Leigey Renaud Post No. 8386 will serve breakfast Sunday from 8-11 a.m. The menu includes ham, eggs, fries, toast, juice and coffee. Prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12.
Paddle party Columbia Fire Co. of Osceola Mills will host a paddle party Sunday at 4 p.m. at the firehall. Prices are $3 for the first paddle and $1 each after that. The kitchen will also be open, and door prizes will be given away.
Roast beef dinner A roast beef dinner will be served at the Glen Hope firehall Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The menu includes roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, coleslaw or applesauce, drink, roll and a dessert. Prices are $8.50 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12. Adult takeouts are available. --- To have an event included, submit the information in writing to any office of The Progress by noon Tuesday. Late submissions will not be published, nor will submissions that do not include a contact person and daytime telephone number. The Progress does not include bingo, club events that are limited to members and guests only, or yard sales or flea markets by private individuals in the Weekend Events section.
