Bison put seven in semis in D-9
Saturday, February 23, 2013
By Rich Murawski Assistant Sports Editor
CLARION - The Clearfield wrestling team advanced seven to this morning's semifinal round of the District 4-9 Tournament at Clarion University's Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium after a quick Friday night of action.
Logan Gilbert (106), Nolan Barger (145) and Jake Verchick (285) each picked up wins to earn their way to the semis, while Josiah McClarren, (113), Noah Cline (120), Dylan Graham (126) and Christian Stone (132) enjoyed quarterfinal round byes.
Only a two-bout pigtail round, the quarterfinals and a two-bout consolation round were wrestled Friday evening.
The Bison have all 10 wrestlers they entered in the tournament still competing.
Jon Sponsler (138), Mike Beck (152) and Grant Climie (160) dropped their quarterfinal bouts and look to bounce back in this morning's second round of wrestlebacks.
Gilbert, sixth-seeded at 106, knocked off Jersey Shore's third-seed Noah Ulmer, 2-1. Ulmer was the only Top 3 seed to lose in Friday night's action.
Barger racked up nearfall points at will in a 17-0 technical fall over Selinsgrove's Logan Boyer, and Verchick notched Clearfield's only pin of the night when he showed DuBois' Nate Petitti the lights in 5:36.
Verchick, who competed at 182 and 195 throughout the year, bumped all the way up to heavyweight for the tourney. He was originally tabbed the fourth seed, but after Jersey Shore's Nate Caputo was scratched from the tournament, Verchick moved up to third.
Sponsler dropped a 5-0 decision to St. Marys' Alex Coudriet in his quarterfinal bout, while Beck fell to Jersey Shore's Curtis Welch, 8-4. Climie was pinned by William Gabor of St. Marys.
All three Bison lost to third seeds.
Clearfield enters today's action in eighth place in the nine-team tourney with 9.5 points. St. Marys (31), DuBois (28) and Shikellamy (27) are the top three teams after Friday's session.
Wrestling was scheduled to resume this morning at 11 a.m. with the semifinals and second-round consolations.
The third-place consolations are slated to begin at 5:30 p.m., with the Hall of Fame inductions, the Parade of Champions and the championship finals to follow.
The top four placewinners advance to next weekends Northwest Regional Tournament in Altoona.
