Clearfield swimmers down Brookville

By Andy Stine Sports Writer
HYDE - The Clearfield swimming and diving teams and head coach Jackie Morrison know there is still much work left before the postseason gets under way. Unfortunately injuries have taken a toll for the teams this season, but Morrison has remained optimistic.
After Thursday evening's meet with Brookville, she has even more of a reason to be optimistic as both teams came out of the meet with wins.
The Bison won seven events en route to a 100-68 victory, while the Lady Bison picked up wins in every event in a 145-23 win. Both teams improved to 11-1 on the season.
"I'm getting excited for the district meet," said Morrison. "Our newer swimmers are starting to figure it out and learn and execute the skills. That's always fun to watch and think about where they started."
"Meets are always full of ups and downs. There were probably more highs than lows tonight. A couple of kids got opportunities that normally wouldn't make it into the lineup."
Junior Kara Thorp came away with two individual wins and was also part of two relay wins.
Thorp finished at 2:28.61 in the 200 IM and 1:09.65 in the 100 back. She also led off in the 200 medley and 400 free relays. Thorp joined Claire Mikesell, Courtney Smith and Lauren Conrad in the 200 medley relay, and Smith, Morgan Young and Devan Sponsler in the 400 free relay.
"I'm liking the way I saw Kara Thorp attack her swims tonight," said Morrison. "I haven't seen that for a while. When you see her swimming like that, it builds confidence. I saw a little bit of a turning of the corner tonight, and I'm hoping she keeps progressing."
Lauren Conrad picked up the victory in the 200 free and 100 fly, while Claire Mikesell grabbed wins in the 50 free and 500 free and was the anchor in the 200 free relay. Conrad, Young and Jessica Matten were also winners with Mikesell in the 200 free relay.
Courtney Smith and Sponsler finished in first place in the 100 free and 100 breast, respectively, while Jessica Shomo picked up the win in the 1-meter diving competition.
The boys picked up wins with the 200 and 400 free relays. The team of Michael Spencer, Alex Shugarts, Preston Sheeder and Wyatt Flanagan won both events.
Spencer also picked up wins in the 200 IM and the 100 back, while Flanagan grabbed first place in the 200 free and Sheeder won the 100 fly competition.
Matthew Rippey rounded out the wins for the Bison as he took the 1-meter diving competition.
With just two meets left in the regular season, Morrison is hopeful that the teams have hit their peaks at the right time.
"It's a guessing game," she said. "They're producing in practice. It seems that we are where we need to be, but there's no guarantee.
"We hope that the process works, but at this time of the year, my main concern are injuries and illness. If we can stay healthy or get healthy, I'd feel a lot more comfortable."
"Our main focus is still hard work, but now we start adding pieces to the puzzle that maybe weren't quite as emphasized early on."
Clearfield is back in action on Monday when it travels to St. Marys.
"I think the results on Monday are going to depend on our health. We need to really work on getting healthy. It should be a fun meet. St. Marys is an awesome team, boys and girls, right now."
