DUBOIS - The Clearfield wrestling team didn't have to wait long for a rematch after last Tuesday's 38-33 win over St. Marys. In fact, there were a lot of similarities in Saturday's District 9 AAA Team Duals semifinal match.
The Bison opened up with a 35-0 lead after the first seven matches on Tuesday and followed that on Saturday with a 35-3 lead after the first eight bouts. The fast start helped Clearfield beat the Dutch, 41-31, for a spot in the championship match.
"Starting where we did gave us that Kentucky Derby feel again where we have to use our sprint horses to see how far we can get out in front and hopefully hang on," said Clearfield head coach Jeff Aveni. "I thought St. Marys had a really good team effort."
With the contest starting at 113, Josiah McClarren set the tone for the Bison. McClarren scored an early takedown and turned over St. Marys' Ethan Fox and earned the pin at 1:46.
After Noah Cline received a forfeit at 120, Dylan Graham displayed a takedown clinic for the large crowd in attendance.
The Bison senior cashed in on three takedowns in the first period, one in the second and two more in the third period to major decision Willie McGonnell, 14-4.
Christian Stone made quick work of Dutch 132-pounder Kyle Pecht, showing him the lights in just 29 seconds.
Afterward, Alex Coudriet scored takedowns in the first and second period to defeat Clearfield's Jonathan Sponsler, 5-1. Sponsler scored his only point on an interlock by Coudriet.
Clearfield sophomore Grant Climie came through with one of the biggest victories for the Bison on the day.
St. Marys' Dylan Smith led 2-0 with a minute to go in the third period when Climie countered on a single leg and put Smith right to his back. Climie readjusted his grip and pinned Smith in 5:37.
"Grant Climie came through with a win," said Aveni. "He doesn't have many of them this year and he comes out and gets a fall in the District 9 semis. Great win for him."
Nolan Barger came through with nearfall points in the first and second period each and came picked up a major decision on Tyler Yetzer, 11-0.
Clearfield junior Mike Beck held a 6-2 lead late in the third period when Dutch 160-pounder Alex Feldbauer reversed and put him on his back for a two-count for two nearfall points.
But Beck powered through and switched Feldbauer with 20 seconds to go to come away with an 8-6 win.
"Mike Beck beat a really good kid," said Aveni. "Feldbauer is one of their better kids. Mike Beck just went out and took it to him for six minutes. Great win by Beck."
"(Climie and Beck) were the two decisive matches, and we got the job done at 113 and 126. With those weights, we got the job done to put us in position for those two to be able to really seal the deal for us."
After Clearfield's Josh Kennedy was pinned at 170 by Bill Gabor, Jake Verchick lost by major decisioned to Dutch 182-pounder Josh Cameroni.
Cameroni built a 7-2 lead after two periods with two takedowns and three back points. Cameroni added an escape and an additional takedown to win, 10-2.
After the Bison forfeited at 195 and 220, St. Marys heavyweight Mike Wolfel pinned Shane Billings at the 3:08 mark. Billings fought off a fall attempt late in the first period after a single leg, but Wolfel was able to turn Billings on a half-nelson for the fall in the second.
With the score at 35-31 with one match to go, Logan Gilbert nearly got the fall in the first period on an armbar in his match against Raymond Dent at 106.
Dent was injured on the attempt, but Gilbert re-applied the tilt in the second period and earned the fall at 2:26.

After the Bison opened up a big lead in the District 9 AAA championship match, the DuBois upper weights scored bonus points, including forfeits at four weights, to defeat Clearfield.
"It's tough to get enough points to hold off their upper weights, and we didn't get that many bonus points in the lower weights," said Aveni. "They still got the job done when they needed to anyway."
Cline scored takedowns in the first and third period and a reversal in the second period to beat Beaver 120-pounder Kody Cox, 6-2.
Graham built a commanding 13-3 lead in the second period on Austin Gahr with slick moves from his feet. Graham had five takedowns in the match before picking up the fall in 2:45.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first period to Dylan Zimmerman, Sponsler picked up an escape and a takedown in the last 10 seconds of the second period.
Zimmerman escaped to start the second period, but Sponsler took him down once more and held on to win, 5-4.
DuBois 138-pounder Garrett Brown avenged a loss from earlier in the season to Stone, earning a takedown with 25 seconds left in the match to win, 4-3. Stone edged Brown on Dec. 11 by 3-1 decision in overtime.
Barger scored eight nearfall points at 145 to win by technical fall over D.J. Carney, 15-0 at 4:16.
Beck rounded out the scoring for the Bison with a pin against Jake Munz in 1:39.
After forfeits to Mike Kennelly (160), Tom Sleigh (170) and Shane Marshall (182), Landon Hanna hooked up a cradle and pinned Verchick in 57 seconds to give DuBois a 27-23 lead. The win was the 100th of Hanna's career.
After forfeiting to DuBois 220-pounder Nick Davido, the Beavers earned falls from Nate Petitti, Shae Bloom and Bryce Swauger to round out the match.
"One of our goals was to wrestle DuBois for a district championship," said Aveni. "We're just a couple horses short of being able to compete with them. We're not that far from them, even though the score doesn't say that.
"They're going to graduate a lot. We're bringing a lot back, so we'll see where we're at next year."
"They're solid. I think they're going to make a good showing for District 9 down at the state tournament. I wish them the best of luck."
Clearfield (7-8) hosts Philipsburg-Osceola on Tuesday.
