P-O crowns three champions at Mountaineer Tournament
Monday, December 10, 2012
By Rich Murawski Assistant Sports Editor
PHILIPSBURG - The Philipsburg-Osceola wrestling team crowned three champions and placed more three in the Top 3 on the way to a second-place finish in the team race at its own JJ Powell Mountaineer Tournament on Saturday.
Chris Thompson (106), Brian Evans (126) and Bub Lumadue (182) earned titles for P-O, while Jay Prentice - the Mounties only other finalist - was the runner-up at 160.
Justin Millard (145) and Nick Gray (220) each charged back through the consolation bracket to garner third-place finishes.
The Mounties, who won their season-opening tournament last season, were 36.5 points behind Central Dauphin East in the team race. But Mountie head coach Tim McCamley says his squad could have significantly closed that gap if it weren't for some costly miscues.
"I think we wrestled hard, but we made a lot of mistakes," he said. "We got pinned five times in matches we were winning. That's tough to come back from.
"But we know what we need to work on. We have a long way to go, but the potential is there to be pretty darn good. I think most of the kids wrestled their hearts out, and some of them had a great tournament. I can't say I'm not pleased, but there's a lot of room for improvement."
Thompson was dominant at 106, earning a first-round bye before recording an early third-period fall in his semifinal. He pinned Central Dauphin East's Anthony Radic in 18 seconds in the championship.
Evans also won by fall in his semifinal after a first-round bye, then topped Somerset's Sheldon Wagner, 3-1, in the finals.
Lumadue took a similar path to the finals as his teammates, getting a bye and a fall, before using a front headlock to take New Oxford's Charlie Hoffman to his back and decking him in 2:24 in the finals.
Prentice lost a tough, 5-4, decision to Somerset's Landon Lohr in their 160-pound title bout in what was likely the most entertaining final of the tournament. He scored a 13-4 major decision over Central Dauphin East's Brandon Mays to get there.
"All our finalists wrestled well," McCamley said. "Jay wrestled a really good match in the finals, and that could have gone in either way."
Curwensville was sixth in the team race with 113.5 points, while Moshannon Valley was right behind the Tide in seventh with 109 points.
Neither squad had a champion, but the Black Knights did produce three runners-up and the Tide had one. Both teams wrestled well in the consolation bracket.
The Golden Tide and Black Knights both had a trio of third-place finishers.
Mo Valley's Ryan Thomas easily outwrestled his fifth seed at 138, earning a spot in the finals, where he was pinned by James Buchanon's Blake Egolf in the second period. Thomas scored a 12-1 major decision in his quarterfinal bout over Curwensville's Brandon Sass before topping top-seeded Jon Fabian, of Somerset, 2-1, in the semis.
Black Knight upper weights James Stodart (195) and Jake Ludwig (220), each seeded first at their weight, fell in very close finals bouts.
"Ryan wanted to go back out and wrestle (Egolf) as soon as the match was over," Mo Valley head coach Justin Fye said. "James and Jake did, too. You can't beat wrestling those caliber of kids right off the bat. They all want to get back out there and wrestle those matches again, and that's the attitude you want to see."
Stodart dropped an 11-8 decision to Somerset's Jacob Nickelson, while Ludwig was nipped, 3-2, by Altoona's Mante Barnes. Both Stodart and Ludwig pinned their semifinal opponents.
"We wanted to come here because we thought this was better competition, and it was," Fye said. "We got pushed, which is good. You don't want to come out the first tournament and just dominate. You need things to improve on. All our kids have things to improve on, and they're coming to us and saying. ‘hey, I need to work on this.' And that's good when kids can do that."
Dylan Fudalski (126), Bryce Bloom (132) and Jack Bunnell (285) placed third for the Knights.
Along the way, Fudalski recorded the tourney's fastest fall, a 17-second pin of Curwensville's Aryan Shearer in the consolation semis. Bunnell avenged an opening round, 5-2, loss to P-O's R.J. Kephart with a 3-1 win in the third-place bout.
"The guys that lost early came back and won matches, and that was nice to see," Fye said. "There was improvement by all the kids throughout the day."
"I was very pleased with how we wrestled. I think our conditioning was great compared to last year. We worked a lot on that. And every kid wrestled tough. I can't say there was one kid that didn't go out and wrestle as hard as he could the whole time."
Curwensville's Tyler Mays (120) was the lone Tide representative in the finals, where he was defeated by Central Dauphin East's Tanner Trephan, 3-1.
The Golden Tide also placed Sam Bressler (113), Zach Tibbens (160) and Nate Wriglesworth (170) third.
Bressler picked up a pair of technical falls in the tournament. Tibbens was 3-1 with three falls. His only loss was an 8-3 setback to Lohr. Wriglesworth recorded two falls after losing his opening bout.
"I was very pleased with the demeanor of our kids and how they finished," Golden Tide head coach Duane Wriglesworth said. "If you look at how the brackets were set up, we met, if not exceeded, our seeds in most cases.
"It was a tough tournament, and it helped up to see some places where we are having difficulties."
In addition to Tanner Trephan, Central Dauphin East had champs in Leo Hidalgo (145) and Austin Trephan (170).
Joining Barnes atop the medal stand for Altoona, which placed third in the team standings, were D.J. Hollingshead (132) and Austin Rosenberry (285).
New Oxford's Lake Laughman (113) and James Buchanon's Casey Glunt (152) were the other titlists.
Thompson, Hollingshead and Barnes were returning Mountaineer Tournament champions.
P-O and Curwensville are back in action on Tuesday.
The Mounties host Bellefonte, while the Golden Tide travel to West Branch. Mo Valley returns to the mat Saturday, hosting the ICC North-South Duals.
