Harmony school board holds reorganizational meeting

WESTOVER - Harmony Area School Board, at Monday's reorganizational meeting, retained Norman Fry as president and Jason Sunderland as vice president, according to Dara Campbell, board secretary.
Also at the meeting, the board set the 2013 dates for work sessions and business meetings. All meetings will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at the high school library.
The work session dates are Jan. 28, Feb. 25, March 25, April 29, May 28, June 24, Aug. 26, Sept. 30, Oct. 28 and Nov. 25. Business meeting dates are Jan. 2, Feb. 4, March 4, April 8, May 6, June 3, Aug. 5, Sept. 3, Oct. 7, Nov. 4 and Dec. 3. The board will also hold its reorganizational meeting Dec. 3 prior to the monthly business meeting.
At the business meeting that followed, the board approved the following items of business:
• hiring Sonya Buterbaugh as a long-term substitute instructor retroactive to Nov. 13 through Jan. 2 and Roger Young Jr. as a junior high boys' assistant basketball coach for the 2012-13 school year at an annual salary of $1,807.02
• authorizing Sean McMullen and Shannon Watson continuing as instructors to home-bound students at a rate of $20 per hour for a maximum of five hours per week. McMullen will work through Dec. 21 and Watson, Feb. 24.
• approving Dawn Jarvie, speech therapist, and Nancy Oaks, instructor, attending nonviolent crisis intervention training at Central Intermediate Unit No. 10 Jan. 10-11. The cost is $373.96.
• adopting revised policies for student graduation requirements and instructor lesson plans.
• approving student field trips, at no cost to the district, including district chorus delegates to attend the festival at Mifflin County High School, Lewistown, Feb. 6-9; the senior class trip to Walt Disney World May 20-24; and the girls' softball team to a Pittsburgh Pirates game May 17.
• accepting change orders resulting in a $35,321.72 credit to the school district for its renovation project and project change orders at a cost of $24,442.64.
• authorizing submitting Plan Con Part I to the state Department of Education to allow the agency to review and approve the change orders for the renovation project required because they are at a cost greater than $10,000.
The board will meet for a combined business meeting and work session Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. at the high school library.
