United Way at 77 percent of goal
Wednesday, October 24, 2012
By Wendy Lynn Brion Staff Writer
At the last report meeting for Clearfield Area United Way it was learned that CAUW was at 60 percent of its goal of $245,000. Yesterday, $41,303.63 was reported, bringing the total to $187,478.94, or 77 percent of the goal.
The need is urgent this year. Nancy Lombardo, director of Clearfield County League on Social Services gave a report on the need of her agency and said due to cutbacks she had to let go of two full time staff members. She said they were notified in July via e-mail that a $50,000 grant they had been awarded was now gone and they needed to close out immediately. "It's been devastating," she said.
CCLSS has nothing to make up that money and Lombardo said they expect they will be short approximately $1,500 a month. Programs are being consolidated between counties in order to save money and resources.
Lombardo remarked that everyone has ups and downs, but this year has been the worst ever. Two programs had to be eliminated, the car seat loaner program and the emergency food and shelter program. She was told the county did not meet the poverty and unemployment guidelines this year for funding, although Clearfield County has met the guidelines in the past. However, the guidelines have been changed as well.
CCLSS is working on fundraisers and is accepting donations. Currently they are holding a raffle and tickets, which are $5 each, can be purchased by contacting Lombardo at 765-3353.
CAUW is also planning some fundraisers and learned recently that both Centre and Bradford elementary schools will be holding change drives soon and Clearfield Elementary School is planning a fundraiser in February.
