Tuesday, October 16, 2012
By Annie Lynn Staff Writer
HOUTZDALE - The Moshannon Valley School Board of Directors heard last night from Josh Berndt who spoke on behalf of Alumni Football USA seeking permission to use the Moshannon Valley football field for alumni games.
District Superintendent Tonya DeVecchis-Kerr and board President Rod Kitko agreed the board needs to investigate the matter further since they had not heard about it before the meeting.
They asked Berndt for a written proposal, noting when they have all the information, they will make a decision.
Junior Class Advisor, Penny Diehl, spoke to the board regarding the 2013 prom and requesting permission to hold the prom at Christ the King Catholic Church facilities in Houtzdale. The prom has been held at Moshannon Valley School for 40 years, according to Rod Kitko. Diehl presented information about the cost to have it there, decorations, tear down issues as well as other matters. The board asked for additional information before making a decision.
In her report, DeVecchis-Kerr mentioned a power outage at the elementary school last week due to a break in the line. The district is working with Penelec and New Enterprise Stone and Lime to determine the cause. A temporary solution is in effect. She also noted the district has received a $14,000 grant for School Based Behavioral Health Program.
John Dibert, High School Principal, reported that Friday is Senior Night and the last home varsity football game; Nov. 7 and 8 will be parent-teacher conferences from 3 to 8 p.m. and parents are encouraged to make arrangements for meeting times; the winter sports PIAA sportsmanship presentation will be held Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. and all parents, students and coaches who participate in winter sports are required to attend; the National Honor Society will conduct new inductions Nov. 15 at 6:30. Dibert also noted that Jacob Ferlitch was the School Wide Positive Behavior student of the month. He along with several other students had a breakfast prepared by Dibert.
Elementary Principal, Connie Godin, reported the elementary school was chosen for the Clearfield Walmart Teacher Rewards Program; Harvest Day will be held Oct. 26; parent-teacher conferences will be held Nov. 7 and 8; Veteran's Day activities will be Nov. 13 and will include among other things, a 21 gun salute by the American Legion and the National Anthem played by the high school band and American Education Week is Nov. 13-16.
The board approved motions for Diehl to take the Academic Decathlon team to Penns Valley High School to compete on Nov. 8.
