VFW kicks off Patriot's Pen competition
Saturday, October 6, 2012
Clearfield Veterans of Foreign Wars F. Michael Sicks Post No. 1785 announced the kickoff of this year's VFW and its ladies auxiliary Patriot's Pen essay competition.
Middle school students in grade six through eight have the opportunity to compete in the VFW annual essay competition and win money.
Students begin by competing at the local post level, then post winners advance to district, district winners compete in the state competition and state winners compete for $46,000 in awards, and the first-place winner wins $5,000. Each year, approximately 126,000 students participate nationwide.
Students are invited to write a 300- to 400-word essay on a patriot theme. The theme for 2012-13, which is the 18th year of the contest, is "What I would tell America's Founding Fathers."
Deadline for the entries is Nov. 1, and interested students and teachers should contact Katherine Friberg at 765-8707 or Bambi Freeman at 592-0403.
