Theme set for Mo Valley Relay
Wednesday, October 3, 2012
By Tyler Kolesar Staff Writer
PHILIPSBURG - The theme is set for next year's Relay For Life of the Moshannon Valley, as Relay members chose from three themes at last night's monthly meeting. Members narrowed their choices from music, circus, or cartoons. Of the 15 members in attendance, six voted for cartoons, five voted for circus, and four voted for music. Suggested slogans included "Get Animated, Fight Cancer" and "Laughter is the Best Medicine". However, no decision on slogans was reached during the meeting. The event will take place starting at 8 a.m. on June 15 and go until 8 a.m. June 16. It will once again be held at the Geisinger Medical Center parking lot in Philipsburg.
Susan Babik of the American Cancer Society went over the 2012 stats and gave 2013 goals. At last year's event, a total of $90,720 was raised. This number includes $10,145 from online donations and $15,060 from sponsorships. 26 teams participated with 89 survivors taking part. For 2013, the goal is to get at least $91,000 total, $14,750 in sponsorship, and $10,500 for online donations.
Those wanting to make online donations can go to www.relayforlife.org/pathemoshannonvalley  and make a $10 minimum donation using your credit or debit card. You can also buy luminaria or donate to a team, individual or event from the website.
Chairman Gary Williams said a big thing they'd like to improve this year is the amount of teams. Williams said he feels there's a perception that in order to be a team in the event, you have to raise a very large amount of money. This isn't necessarily true. While it is true the more money raised the better, Williams said you shouldn't be worried on how much money a team raises.
"Do what you can do," said Williams. "Every bit helps."
Babik said the chair and vice chair needed to be chosen for 2013.
The members all agreed to keep Williams in the chairman's spot and to have Jamie Wagner as vice chair.
Relay meetings are on the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. But due to the November election, the group will meet on Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church's parish hall in Philipsburg.
