Freeberg, Clearfield girls soccer shut out Tyrone, 7-0
Wednesday, September 19, 2012
By Rich Murawski Assistant Sports Editor
HYDE - After putting 23 goals on the board in its first three games - all shutout wins - the Clearfield girls soccer team experienced a bit of a scoring drought in a 3-0 loss to Bellefonte and a 1-1 tie with Brookville.
But the Lady Bison found the offense once again Tuesday afternoon at the Bison Sports Complex, scoring a 7-0 win over visiting Tyrone. Clearfield improved to 4-1-1 with the win.
"Our objective today was to work on another formation with more of a focus on finishing," Clearfield co-head coach Tom Mohney said. "I was pleased with the way we set things up and how we finished. It wasn't just random. We set it up, executed and finished. There was a rhyme and a reason for what we did."
Carlee Freeberg led Clearfield with three goals, netting both Lady Bison first-half tallies and hitting the first of five in the second half.
Shannon Reinke added two goals, while Tessa Munshower and Raquel Grice each found the back of the Lady Eagle net once.
"Carlee had a great day again," Mohney said. "But we had other scorers as well.
"In the second half, we got Tessa into the mode of finishing shots, and she had three or four quality shots on goal and connected with a beautiful one. Shannon finished well, and Raquel is always a force up top."
Freeberg scored just 1:51 into the game, blasting one by Tyrone keeper Mikayla Fisher following a pinpoint pass from McKenna Aleksivich to set her up.
Aleksivich sprung Freeberg again about nine minutes later, attacking from the right wing and sending a pass to the slot where the Lady Bison striker connected for a 2-0 lead.
Clearfield continued to pressure the Lady Eagle net, getting quality shots from Aleksivich, Sabrina Schwartz, Haley McKendrick and Munshower. But Fisher was up to the task, keeping the Tyrone deficit to just two.
The Lady Eagles made a run of their own late in the first half, getting a pair of dangerous shots on frame that Lady Bison keeper Dorothy Celli stopped, sending Clearfield into the break with a 2-0 advantage.
Ellen Crook was a force for Tyrone in the first 40 minutes, registering four of the Lady Eagles five shots.
But Crook did not return in the second half and Tyrone had a hard time generating any offense, putting just one shot on goal, which new Clearfield keeper Brianna Spencer stopped.
"They lost Ellen up top to an injury, and she is a quality player," Mohney said. "They were a little lost without her.
"But Tyrone has come a long way. It's nice to see."
Meanwhile the Clearfield offense was clicking on all cylinders.
Freeberg recorded the hat trick at 51:57, beating Fisher to a loose ball and blasting it by her to up the lead to 3-0.
Schwartz sent a ball toward the Tyrone goal, and Freeberg and Fisher arrived at the ball at the same time. It trickled to Fisher's left and Freeberg was there to clean up the mess.
The Lady Bison picked up two more goals in a span of 2:05, as Reinke and Munshower connected with shots. Both were assisted by Grice.
The first goal was started by a Munshower direct kick that Grice corralled and then sent a short pass to a wide-open Reinke.
Grice sent a drop pass to Munshower for the next score and the Lady Bison midfielder drilled it from about 20 yards out.
After setting up two goals, Grice nailed one of her own at 74:29 after receiving a cross pass from Emily Ryan on the right wing.
Reinke finalized the scoring at 78:19, getting behind the defense and blistering a shot to the back of the Lady Eagle goal. Taylor Dixon assisted on the play.
"It was a good game for us to practice doing everything with a purpose," Mohney said. "I thought we did a much better job with the back four, right up through the midfield connecting and then finishing.
"Overall we did well, I was pleased with how well we played."
Clearfield also received good news from Lauren Ammerman.
The Lady Bison junior was thought to have been lost for the season due to an injury received in Clearfield's first scrimmage. But she has been healing well and could return to the field of play within three weeks.
"It was a good evening for Clearfield girls soccer," Mohney said.
The Lady Bison won the jayvee game, 6-0. Ryan had two goals and two assists, McKendrick scored twice, and Grice and Janelle Wallace each netted one for the Clearfield jayvee, which improved to 5-0.
Clearfield travels to Penns Valley today.
