Stratton scores four TDs as Bison top Rams, 47-0 Saturday, September 08, 2012 By Walt Moody For The Progress SPRING MILLS - Clearfield's Tyler Stratton was as electrifying as the skies in Penns Valley on Friday. The Bison running back/defensive back scored four touchdowns in less than 15 minutes as Clearfield smashed the Rams 47-0 in a contest that was delayed more than 2 1/2 hours by lightning. Stratton picked off a pass on the game's second play from scrimmage and raced 34 yards for a touchdown and the romp was on for the Bison (2-0), who scored three touchdowns in the first 4:06. Stratton added scoring runs of 4, 1 and 8 yards to help lead Clearfield to touchdown drives on its first five offensive possessions. "I came out ready and focused," said Stratton, who rushed for 133 yards on 12 carries. "I had my team out there to pull us through everything. It wasn't just me. Our linemen, they made perfect holes for me. I just run hard and with a lot of spirit." Stratton made sure Penns Valley's night got off to a miserable start. On second-and-2, Penns Valley quarterback Cameron Tobias fired a short pass, but Stratton sliced in front of the receiver, grabbed the ball in stride and ran untouched for the 34-yard score. Spencer Herrington's extra point made it 7-0 just 17 seconds into the game. "It was very, very lucky," Stratton said. "I just looked down and there was the ball. Then I was running for my life." After its defense forced a three-and-out, Clearfield needed just five plays to drive 52 yards for a score. Quarterback Christian Lezzer had a 21-yard strike to Stratton and a 13-yarder to Trey Jordan on the march. Lezzer capped the march with a one-yard sneak to make it 14-0. Lezzer gave the Clearfield defense its second turnover on Penns Valley's next play. The linebacker was untouched on a blitz and pounded Tobias, stripping the ball and recovering it at the Ram 15. Lezzer then ran 11 yards to set up Stratton's four-yarder to make the score 21-0 with 7:54 left in the first quarter. Tobias' 13-yard run helped the Rams drive 29 yards to the Bison 29, but a fourth-and-5 pass was broken up. With the ball at the 31, Stratton ripped off a 21-yard run to open Clearfield's next drive. He also had a pair of six-yard runs in the 69-yard march, which ended with him waltzing into the end zone untouched from one yard out. A botched snap on the extra point kept the score at 27-0. The Bison then drove 63 yards, just before the lightning arrived. Stratton broke a tackle and broke loose for a 45-yarder on the second play. He capped the march by powering behind a huge surge from the line from eight yards out to make it 34-0 with 9:21 left in the half. Less than a minute later, officials stopped the game at 7:53 p.m., and began a series of 30-minute delays each time lightning was sighted. Stratton had 10 carries for 103 yards before the delay. Lezzer was 4-of-5 for 33 yards and rushed five times for 40 yards. At 10:35 p.m. the game finally resumed. Stratton and Clearfield picked up where they left off. Stratton had a 27-yard run on the first play. After a penalty made it second-and-19 from the 47, Lezzer lofted a pass for Jordan, who soared over a Ram defensive back to snare the ball and trotted into end zone to make it 41-0 with 4:20 left in the half. "Being the team we are, we goofed around a little bit," Stratton said of the delay. "Then we got refocused, got everyone hyped back up, came out and showed we weren't tired and ready for the worst." With the running clock for the mercy rule, Clearfield coach Tim Janocko played mostly reserves over the final two quarters. Penns Valley was able to make its deepest drive on its first possession of the second half. Taylor Collison's 24-yard run keyed the march. On fourth-and-goal from the 12, Tobias was flushed out of the pocket, rolled down the left sideline and dove for the pylon, but was ruled out at the Clearfield 2. Clearfield tacked on a fourth-quarter score as Jesus Rosa rolled 18 yards around right end. Lezzer finished 5-for-6 for 80 yards and rushed six times for 43. Jordan caught three passes for 66 yards. Collison led the Rams with nine carries for 56 yards. Tobias, who had several passes dropped, was 5-for-13 for 44 yards and had eight carries for 44 yards. Clearfield plays host to Central in a battle of unbeatens on Friday, while Penns Valley travels to undefeated Bald Eagle Area.
