Man accused of assaulting police waives hearing
Thursday, September 06, 2012
By Jeff Corcino Staff Writer
A Hyde man accused of assaulting sheriff deputies while trying to escape arrest waived his right to a preliminary hearing yesterday before Magisterial District Judge Jerome Nevling
Christopher N. Clark, 30, is charged with three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of simple assault, two counts of recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest, flight to avoid apprehension and criminal attempt/escape.
On Aug. 27, Clark was listed as the Crimestoppers fugitive of the week in Clearfield County after he failed to appear for arraignment court on Aug. 3 on charges related to an incident where he was accused of assaulting someone with a baseball bat. He also was accused of striking the victim's car several times with the bat.
For the original incident, Clark was charged with aggravated assault, criminal mischief, five counts of terroristic threats, simple assault, six counts of recklessly endangering another person, five counts of disorderly conduct and five counts of harassment.
For this latest incident, according to the affidavit of probable cause, on Aug. 28, after receiving a tip on Clark's whereabouts, six uniformed sheriff deputies, Mark Coudriet, Samantha Hunter, Jeff Rhone, Mike Rowles, Nathan Curry and Tammy Murray arrived at the residence of William Dimmick on Lincoln Avenue in Hyde.
Dimmick gave them consent to search the home and Clark was found upstairs. Rhone, Rowles and Curry informed him of the bench warrants and told him he was under arrest. When the deputies attempted to detain Clark, he jumped over a banister and dove down a staircase in an attempt to flee. Rowles grabbed Clark but he was able to break free due to his body weight and aggressive actions. Rowles' left hand and fingers had swelling as a result.
Curry, who was at the top of the staircase, grabbed Clark by the waist, but was pulled off his feet and fell down 13 steps with the defendant.
Upon reaching the bottom of the stairs the defendant went into the kitchen area with Curry engaged with him the entire time. Clark then struck Curry in the face, knocking off his glasses. Curry then drove Clark into a stove and Clark raised his hand in an attempt to strike Curry, but Rowles and Rhone entered the kitchen and stopped him.
The deputies gave Clark multiple commands but he continued to resist physically.
Coudriet and Hunter engaged the defendant in the struggle and deputies were able to get him on the floor but he continued to aggressively struggle until the deputies managed to handcuff him.
The deputies put Clark chest down on the floor until ankle shackles could be placed on him to assure safe transport.
As a result of the struggle Curry received multiple scrapes, scratches, bruising and swelling and had pain in his right leg and knee area and in his left wrist and shoulder.
Clark is incarcerated in the Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $50,000 straight bail.
