United Way getting ready for annual fund drive Tuesday, August 21, 2012 By Wendy Lynn Brion Staff Writer Clearfield Area United Way held a board meeting yesterday and discussed helping a couple of local non-profit agencies as well as the upcoming fundraising campaign. CAUW received a letter from the League on Social Services explaining that funding for the Local Education Resource Network program had suffered a $50,000 cut in funding from the state. In the past it had been funded through the Pennsylvania Offices of Child Development and Early Learning. The letter noted that 90 percent of brain development occurs in a child before age 5 and LEARN has been used to provide learning and resources to children in the county to give them a good start in education. CCLSS requested help with their First Book program, which provides free books to low-income children to start their own home libraries. CCLSS needs $2,000 to keep the program going and asked CAUW to donate towards the program. After some discussion the board voted to donate $500 to First Book. The second letter was from the Clearfield County Society for Handicapped and Disabled Citizens and explained that the carpeting in the main room of their building is frayed and torn in some places, posing a hazard for many of their handicapped and disabled clients. CCSHDC would like to replace the carpeting with tile at a cost of $425. After discussing the matter the CAUW board voted to donate the $425 for the tile flooring. It was also announced that the Jeans for Teens event will take place later this week and approximately 20 teens will be helped with new clothes for school at Walmart and JC Penney. More information will be forthcoming on the success of the event. CAUW is also is sending out letters to past donors to the United Way fundraising campaign and many of those letters will come through the mail next week. Two fundraisers are being planned with local restaurants. On Aug. 27, Scotto's Pizza will donate 10 percent of proceeds at the all day Dine-Around event. Also, in September, the Dutch Pantry will be selling United Way Restaurant Tags. For a donation you can purchase a tag to be hung in the restaurant as support for CAUW United Way and it's 25 local member agencies. More fundraising events are being planned as well. The kick off luncheon for this year's fundraising campaign will be Sept. 27 at noon at the St. Charles Café.
