Lake authority OKs equipment purchase Thursday, August 09, 2012 By Dianne Byers Staff Writer CURWENSVILLE - Curwensville Lake Authority, yesterday, authorized the purchase of a new piece of equipment and searching for another. With a 4-0 vote, the authority approved purchasing a John Deere Gator utility vehicle through the state's COSTARS cooperative purchasing program. Voting to approve were Aaron Evans, Jim Kling, Jesse Mayhew and Susan Reed. Charles Guarino was absent. The two-seat vehicle, which features a hard top, windshield, mirrors and a manual dump bed, will be purchased from Carns Equipment, Clearfield at a cost of $11,400 plus additional costs for financing. Kling, the authority's chairman and Guarino, treasurer, were given permission to determine whether a three or four-year lease for the purchase would be the best option for the authority. The new vehicle replaces a current John Deere Gator utility vehicle purchased for use at Curwensville Lake Recreation Area in the early 2000s prior to the authority's formation and currently has about 3,000 hours of operation. The vehicle is used by the CLRA's crew for a number of small jobs including transporting firewood to the campground sites. In recent months the current vehicle has broken down a number of times resulting in expense for repairs and time lost. The authority also approved locating and purchasing a used 4-cylinder pickup truck. Kling told the authority the lake's crew must use their own vehicles or the large dump truck to travel for parts or materials. The board granted a request from Andrew Allen, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 20 of Bigler, to install trail identification signs at the entrances to approximately 10 new trails that have recently been blazed by volunteers. Allen told the authority he is proposing the service project to earn Eagle Scout certification but he has not yet received permission from Boy Scouts of America. The authority approved the request saying the signs are needed and they welcome the project. In other business, the authority heard the restroom at the marina has been refurbished and is open. Shane Kelly, manager, reported this result in a savings of approximately $500 per month eliminating several portable toilets and their cleaning. The authority's next meeting is Sept. 12 at 3 p.m.
