Saturday, August 04, 2012
By Josh Woods Staff Writer
A pony pulling contest made its debut at the 152nd edition of Clearfield County Fair yesterday morning, followed by the annual horse pulling contest in the afternoon. The inaugural pony pull had a total of four heavyweight competitors and two lightweight competitors, while the horse pull drew eight heavyweights and eight lightweights.
David Ferringer of Shelocta led the team of Skip and Chance to a heavyweight victory in the pony division with a full pull of 13½ feet at 4,750 pounds. David's father, Russel Ferringer, took second place with a full pull with the team of Jim and Jake. Carl Ealy of Reinfrew's team of Rocket and Lily placed third with a 4,750-pound pull of 13 feet, 3 inches.
Clarence Stackhouse of Unityville's team of Sam and Sam placed fourth with a 4,250-pound pull of 5 feet, 3 inches.
Jeremy Brothers of Rochester guided Buck and Duke to a full pull of 3,750 pounds in the lightweight pony division, earning first place honors. Daniel Ferringer of Shelocta led Rex and Tom to a 2-foot pull at 3,750 pounds to earn second place.
In the lightweight horse pull, it was Ira Kessler's team of Mike and Dick earning first place honors. Mike and Dick recorded a full pull of 27½ feet at 9,200 pounds, besting the Frances Root-led team of Jim and Monty who pulled a distance of 10 feet on their third and final attempt.
The Stackhouse Brothers team of Rosco and Popeye placed third with a 8,200-pound pull of 13 feet. Mike Ward's Prince and Mike pulled 7,700 pounds a distance of 5 feet, 6 inches, on their first attempt to earn fourth place. A second Stackhouse Brothers' entry, Marty and Mike, earned fifth place with a 19-inch, 2-foot pull at 7,200 pounds.
Rounding out the field were, Corry's Randy Proper (Rex and Jay), Cochranton's Dan Byler (Doc and Dan), and Bolivar, New York's Rod Johnson (Jim and Monty).
The heavyweight division came down to the wire this year, between Jeff Martin's team of Doc and Cash, Kessler's Sam and Luk, and Root's Mac and Ben. The trio each pulled 9,700 pounds and a full pull would have bested the 2006 fair record of 9,500 pounds. In the end, it was Doc and Cash pulling a distance of 23 feet, 11 inches, to earn first place, narrowly defeating Sam and Luke, 20 feet, 11 inches. Mac and Ben took third with a pull of 2 feet, 11 inches.
Other heavyweight place winners were Jeff Spako of New Albany (Jeb and Tug), fourth place; Evan Martin of Punxsutawney (Bob and Bill), fifth place; Stackhouse Brothers (Boone and Charlie), sixth place; Daniel James of Cochranton (Davey and Shorty), seventh place; and Brandon Porter of West Sunbury (Bill and Sam), eighth place.
