CCIDA approves a subordination agreement Friday, July 27, 2012 By Wendy Lynn Brion Staff Writer Following an executive session yesterday, the Clearfield County Industrial Development Authority approved entering into a subordination agreement concerning outstanding loans from Mahaffey Labs. The authority received a letter from Northwest Savings Bank concerning reconstruction of the loans and the board voted on the agreement. The board also heard from Paul McCloskey, vice president of energy development for the economic development authority, who said he attended a gas expo in Indiana recently and there were 150 vendors and it was a good networking opportunity. He added that the price of natural gas has gone up and yesterday was pricing at $3.18 per gallon. Board Member Geri Hatcher said FPBREAkhe attended a pilot session of the Marcellus Community Science Volunteer Program recently conducted in Clearfield by Penn State and said it was very informative. He said it consists of information from researchers on understanding scientific publications concerning the Marcellus industry and how to understand them. He added that the scientists involved inform those attending about what the current research is, what is now considered wrong information and what they are currently learning. "I was really impressed," he said. An information session will be held at Penn State's DuBois campus Aug. 7 from 7-8 p.m. at the DEF building, room 204 to gauge interest in the formal sessions, which will be held on Tuesdays from Sept. 11 to Oct. 30 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the school. According to information Hatcher provided, the goals are to increase people's knowledge about energy, engage them in scientific practices such as data collection, analysis and interpretation and encourage appreciation for science and scientific inquiry. More information can be had by contacting Margaret Hopkins, project coordinator, at Marcelluspsu.edu or by calling her at 865-5527. The CCIDA board also learned that Helios Scientific has started working in the former Errigo building in Curwensville. They are using the building as a testing facility and research lab for cellulistic ethanol, which uses organic materials other than corn. Board Member George Sankey also asked if the drought in the Midwest is affecting PGP's ability to acquire corn for the ethanol plant in Clearfield. Director Rob Swales said that part of PGP's business plan has them purchasing corn within 200 miles of the plant. He added that the ethanol plant is currently operating now as well. Board members were also informed that the annual CCEDC luncheon will be held Dec. 20 at the Florian Banquet Center, Mill Road, Clearfield.
