Weekend Events Thursday, July 12, 2012 Weekend Events is a weekly feature of The Progress published to alert readers about events planned by nonprofit organizations or events that benefit the community. All events are open to the public. The following events are planned this weekend in Progressland.
Thursday Art show The Susquehanna River Art Center announces a new Artist's Showcase featuring local artists Anna Marie Toto, Dottie Evans and Gloria Rowles, is being displayed at the Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library now through Aug. 3. More than 40 paintings and three-dimensional piece of artwork are exhibited during this show. Mediums include acrylic, oil, watercolor, mixed medium and pastel.
Museum open Grice Community Museum, located at 119 N. Fourth St., Clearfield, is open through September daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults. The display includes antique and classic cars and wild game mounts from around the world. Group tours are welcome. For more information, call 768-7332.
Friday Chicken barbecue Reliance Fire Co. Auxiliary will host a chicken barbecue dinner for Heritage Days on Friday at the company's bingo building, located at 500 N. Centre St., Philipsburg. Price of each dinner is $8.50. The dinner will be from 3-7 and is eat-in or takeout.
Seafood dinners Fish, shrimp or crab cake dinners will be sold Friday from 4-6:30 p.m. at St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church's social hall, Curwensville. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door. Baked or deep-fried fish dinners will be sold at a cost of $8.50 for adults and $4 for children, and fried shrimp or crab cake dinners, $9 for adults and $4 for children. Meals may be eaten in or taken out.
Strawberry festival St. Paul's Episcopal Church, located at Presqueisle and Fourth streets in Philipsburg, will host a strawberry festival from 12:30-3 p.m. Friday. For more information or tickets, call 342-1582.
Saturday Create-A-Sundae Night Create-A-Sundae Night at the Ohio Community Center, located at Morgan Run in West Decatur, will be held Saturday. Sundaes will be $4, and participants can top them with their favorite toppings. A large variety of toppings will be available. The event will be held from 7-9 p.m.
Yard sale The Boosters Club of Clearfield Alliance Christian School will be holding an indoor yard sale Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. in the school gymnasium, located at 45 Alliance Road, Clearfield. There will be free parking along with a concession stand and bake sale.
Hike On Saturday, the Quehanna Area Trails Club will hold a 5-mile hike on the Fred's Woods Trail, which features rock formations and camera-ready views. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Huston Road on state Route 555. Anyone younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Chicken barbecue A chicken barbecue dinner will be held Saturday beginning at noon at Glen Richey Fireman's Recreation Park. The cost is $8 for the meal that includes half a chicken, baked potato, baked beans, coleslaw, roll, dessert and beverage. Meals may be eaten in or taken out.
Ride for Troops, Tomorrow's Hope Curwensville Moose Ride for the Troops Tomorrows Hope will be held on Saturday, the ride is open to the public. The price is $10 per person. Registration is from 9:30-11 a.m. Ride begins at 11 a.m. For more information call Shedy Graham at 592-5094 or Charlie Peters at 577-5425.
Sunday Chicken barbecue There will be a chicken barbecue on Sunday at Shiloh United Methodist Church starting at 11 a.m. and sold out. The cost is $8 and includes half a chicken, potato salad, baked beans, sides and dessert and dinner roll.
Spaghetti dinner A spaghetti dinner will be held Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Westover firehall. The price is $6 for adults and $4 for children. --- To have an event included, submit the information in writing to any office of The Progress by noon Tuesday. Late submissions will not be published, nor will submissions that do not include a contact person and daytime telephone number. The Progress does not include bingo, club events that are limited to members and guests only, or yard sales or flea markets by private individuals in the Weekend Events section.
