Clearfield eliminated at District 8 tournament Monday, July 02, 2012 By Jaclyn Yingling Sports Editor The Clearfield Babe Ruth baseball team went 1-1 on Sunday, defeating State College, 5-1, before losing to Altoona 10-6, in the District 8 15-year-old All-Star Tournament at the Lawrence Township Rec Park. Clearfield went from zero errors in its win, to five in its loss. In the first game, Clearfield's Sawyer Rowles pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run and three walks. He struck out four batters and scattered seven hits. Clearfield came back from a 1-0 deficit in the top of the sixth inning to score three runs in the frame. Rowles led off with a walk and was plated by a double from Josh Kennedy. A single by C.J. Gathagan put runners on first and third with no outs. That chased State College starting pitcher Chris Boal, who was relieved by Nick White. White struck out the first batter he faced. He also got the next batter - Kyle Kushner - to ground out to second. But Kushner's grounder allowed Kennedy to score. A single by Josh Sorbera allowed Gathagan to come home, giving Clearfield a 3-1 lead. Rowles held his own on the mound, getting out of the bottom of the sixth unscathed despite allowing two baserunners. Clearfield added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, as Rowles drew another walk. He later stole second and came home when Kennedy singled into left field. Gathagan brought home Kennedy on a double to make the score, 5-1, in favor of Clearfield. Rowles finished out the game, allowing a leadoff walk before getting a flyout, a groundout and a strikeout looking to set the final. "The kids played good ball," Clearfield manager Ken Duckett said. "We had a couple of mental errors in that second game. But in the first game, I thought we played real well."
Altoona 10, Clearfield 6 Clearfield pounded out six hits, including a double from Rowles, but couldn't overcome a fast start by Altoona, and fell, 10-6. Clearfield had RBIs from Kennedy, Gathagan and Nate Brady. Kennedy took the loss on the mound. He gave up five earned runs on five hits and two walks. Gathagan pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing just one earned run on six hits and one walk. Kennedy had two hits and scored two runs, while Spencer Herrington had two hits. Clearfield finished the tournament, 2-2. Altoona improved to 2-1 and plays West End this afternoon for the title.
