CAUW offers free prescription cards
Friday, June 29, 2012
Clearfield Area United Way is making it easier for everyone to get assistance with prescription medications.
CAUW is giving area residents free FamilyWize prescription discount cards. When you show your card to an area pharmacist they will automatically apply the discount to the cost of your medicine. Savings can be on average 30 percent off name brands and 75 percent off of generics. To find a participating pharmacy, visit the website at http://www.familywize.org/ and click on "Pharmacy Lookup" to enter your zip code.
Nancy Pinto from CAUW attended a United Way of Pennsylvania meeting recently to learn more about FamilyWize, an organization based in Bethlehem.
It is a community service partnership that was established in the fall 2005 to help residents receive the medicine they need.
"When one out of every four people has trouble buying their medicine, we're looking for all ways possible to make sure every person in any local community can get the free help provided by these cards," Pinto said.
Pinto currently has a few thousand cards to distribute to area families, individuals, seniors and anyone who may benefit from savings. Cards are being distributed to United Way member agencies, the local food bank and other organizations, and is anticipating giving them to doctors' offices, pharmacies, churches, etc. Or, residents may call United Way at 765-6521.
There is also an additional way to get a free card. Text the word "family" to 700700 and you will get a discount card sent to your cell phone to show at your pharmacy. "It's a new way to help in addition to cards available through a click of the mouse at FamilyWize's new Facebook page and the ones that we will be distributing," explained Pinto.
According to FamilyWize, in the past year, approximately $9,554 of savings has been seen in eastern, southern and central Clearfield County. "CAUW received a framed Community Partnership Award at our office so that people who support United Way can see the great work being done to advance the common good in the area of health in these communities. Over 980 United Ways are participating nationwide with FamilyWize," Pinto said.
