Weekend Events Thursday, June 28, 2012 Weekend Events is a weekly feature of The Progress published to alert readers about events planned by nonprofit organizations or events that benefit the community. All events are open to the public. The following events are planned this weekend in Progressland. Thursday Museum open Grice Community Museum, located at 119 N. Fourth St., Clearfield, is open through September daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults. The display includes antique and classic cars, and wild game mounts from around the world. Group tours are welcome. For more information, call 768-7332.
Friday Free movie There will be a free family movie at the Old Morris School building, located at 1946 Pardee Road in Morrisdale, on Friday at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by God's Clear View Ministries. For more information, call 496-9847.
Saturday Cancer carnival A cancer carnival will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Woodland Park. Several people in the area with cancer need assistance, including Brandon Denochick, Emily Whitehead, Carol Walls and Drae Storm. All proceeds will go to patients and their families. Food, crafts, a Chinese auction, cute kids contest for children from birth to age 6 with prizes in three age groups, music all day, balloon launch, lottery tree, cancer wall, horseshoe tournament and more will be offered. Dance The Lucky 13's will perform from 7-10 p.m. at the Osceola Mills fire hall; the cost to attend is $4.
Free meal/clothing A free meal and clothing are being offered to struggling families at the Old Morris School, located at 1946 Pardee Road in Morrisdale, on Saturday at 6 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by two local bands. Participants are permitted to get items for others who are unable to attend. The event is sponsored by God's Clear View Ministries. For more information, call 496-9847.
Shoe bank The West Branch Area Shoe Bank will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Morrisdale United Methodist Church, located on state Route 53 in Morrisdale. All children from newborn to 18 years old are eligible to receive new sneakers if they have a CHIP or Access card. Children must be accompanied by an adult. There is a large supply of summer shoes for everyone.
Benefit bingo A benefit basket bingo for Selena Sturgeon will be held Saturday at 5 p.m. at Mahaffey firehall. The cost to attend is $10. Proceeds from the event will go toward medical expenses for Sturgeon, 13, who was severely burned in an accident over Memorial Day weekend. Spaghetti dinner A spaghetti dinner to benefit Bobby Ingram Jr. will be held Saturday from 4-7 p.m. at Curwensville United Methodist Church. The price is $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 4-11, and children age 3 and younger eat for free. Meals may be eaten in or taken out; take-out meals will be available beginning at 3 p.m. Advance tickets are available at Goodman's Foodliner, Curwensville, and they will also be sold at the door.
Sunday Breakfast The Bigler-Jackson-Woodland ladies auxiliary is sponsoring an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon at the fire hall in Bigler. The cost is $8 and the meal includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, french toast, homefries, fruit and a drink.
Museum open The Philipsburg Historical Foundation's museum and research rooms, located on the third floor of the Moshannon Building, 203 N. Front St., will be open Sunday from 2-4 p.m. It will then be open Sundays throughout the summer. Admission is free and donations are accepted.
Auction There will be an auction at the Madera firehall Sunday beginning at 1 p.m., with frozen meats, paper products and much more. The kitchen will be open. Charlie Fisher is the auctioneer and the proceeds benefit Madera Fire Co. --- To have an event included, submit the information in writing to any office of The Progress by noon Tuesday. Late submissions will not be published, nor will submissions that do not include a contact person and daytime telephone number. The Progress does not include bingo, club events that are limited to members and guests only, or yard sales or flea markets by private individuals in the Weekend Events section.
