Curwensville 11- and 12-year-old all-stars fall,14-1 Monday, June 25, 2012 By Andy Stine Sports Writer CURWENSVILLE - Simply put, the Curwensville 11- and 12-year-old Little League all-stars have all seen their better days. And perhaps Tri-County had one of its best days. Nevertheless, Curwensville never managed to get the momentum to swing in their favor on Saturday evening as it was downed by Tri-County, 14-1 in four innings in the District 5 Northern Tier All-Star Tournament. "We made contact, but they seemed to have an answer for every play," said Curwensville manager Rich Terry. "Anytime we hit it hard, they made a nice defensive play. "It was hard for us to get rolling. We never really did get rolling, offensively or defensively. We're a much better team than we showed in all aspects of the game." Curwensville starting pitcher Zach McClure had a little trouble finding his spots in the opening frame. A groundout was sandwiched between two walks and a pair of wild pitches that brought home a run for Tri-County. But, McClure ended anymore Tri-County threats by striking out the next two batters to end the inning. In Curwensville's opening at-bats, two balls from Cameron Moore and Josh Terry were hit hard, but were hit right at the left fielder and right fielder, respectively. Bryce Timko got the first hit of the game on a single to right field, but was stranded at first base on a strikeout to end the inning. Things started quickly in the top of the second for Curwensville with McClure earning a strikeout to begin the inning. But, a walk followed by Tri-County catcher Cory Lehman's double put them ahead 2-0. After a pair of walks and a single scored a run, a double by Jordan Jones cleared the bases and put Tri-County ahead 6-0. "The kids came out excited to play and they were all ready to go," said Rich Terry. "That first big inning they had just took the wind out of our sails. We just never found the answer to keep them down." One of the plays of the game came from Tri-County first baseman Adam Mortimer. Curwensville catcher Avery Francisco hit a line shot right at Mortimer to lead off the bottom of the second inning. Mortimer snagged it to record the first out and woo the crowd. Tri-County went back to work in the top of the third inning, as pinch-hitter Jake Meredith launched a pitch over the right-center field wall for a solo homer to put his team up seven runs. Tri-County scored three more runs in the inning off three additional hits and an error. It was the second inning in a row that Tri-County had batted around. Tri-County also scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Jones hit a two-run single to put a cap on the inning and gave Tri-County a 14-run advantage. Jones was 2-for-3 in the contest and knocked in five runs. But, Curwensville showed fight and some life in their bats in the bottom of the fourth. After Francisco led off the frame with a single, Matt Carter hit a line drive down the right field line for a double to put two runners in scoring position. After a strikeout, Blake Passarelli hit a groundball to second base for an RBI groundout to give Curwensville its lone run. After a pair of walks, a strikeout ended the game to give Tri-County the 10-run rule victory. Curwensville travels to the losing team of Four Leaf Clover and Philipsburg-Osceola's game tonight. The matchup will be on Wednesday at 6. "The kids have their heads up high," said Rich Terry. "They battled and they never gave up. They kept rooting each other on. I have to give credit to their team. They're a good, well-coached team. Our kids are going to bounce back."
