Georgino pitches Clearfield past Upper Deck Baseball Academy
Saturday, June 23, 2012
By Jaclyn Yingling Sports Editor
PHILIPSBURG - In all of the years the Clearfield American Legion baseball team has been playing in the Bellefonte Bandits Tournament, head coach Sid Lansberry said he thought his team has never won its opening game.
That changed on Friday, when the Chiefs pounded out six hits and got a complete game from John Georgino in a 3-2 victory over the Upper Deck Baseball Academy (American Legion Post 86/14) of Rhode Island at the Don Womer Baseball Complex in Philipsburg.
Georgino, a DuBois Legion player who was picked up as an extra pitcher per tournament rules, tossed all seven innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits and four walks. He also struck out seven batters.
"I don't think we have ever won the opening game in this tournament that I can remember," said Lansberry. "I think the best we have ever done is 2-2 one year.
"I'm pleased with how we played today. We are playing a lot of good defense. We are hitting the ball, but the other teams are good, too, defensively. They have made some great plays.
"I feel very good about today. I hope we can continue that tomorrow."
The Chiefs, who lost on Thursday night to Philipsburg, bounced back with a solid game both offensively and defensively.
After getting shut out of the first inning on a double play, Clearfield got on the scoreboard in the second inning.
Georgino drew a one-out walk before Ronny Ogden singled into left field. Georgino's courtesy runner Zack Timchak and Ogden both moved up on a wild pitch.
Cole Kephart then hit a grounder to third, allowing Timchak to come home. Ogden followed a few pitches later when Upper Deck starter Jake Rockefeller uncorked a wild pitch that ricocheted toward the Chiefs' dugout.
Upper Deck catcher Matt Billington was hurt trying to retrieve the ball, but finished out the inning before being replaced by the original designated hitter, Ryan O'Dell.
Georgino, who made it through the first two innings with little trouble, found some in the top of the third inning.
After striking out the leadoff batter, Joe Yankee tripled into right field. Two batters later, Tyler Santanello singled, bringing home Yankee and cutting the score to 2-1.
Georgino struck out the next batter to get out of the inning and limit the damage.
Post 6 had its chances in both the fourth and fifth innings. Upper Deck got out of the fourth with a double play, while the Chiefs left a runner stranded on third in the fifth.
"We hit the ball well today," said Lansberry. "We hit the balls right at people and made some good contact with wood bats. Sometimes the balls don't go as far."
Upper Deck scored another run in the sixth to tie the game on Clearfield's lone error of the game.
Santanello led off with a walk before moving to second on a wild pitch. He later stole third with two outs. On the throw over to third from Georgino, the ball went wide of an outstretched Josh Kennedy, allowing Santanello to scamper home.
Georgino buckled down after the miscue, recording a strikeout to end the frame.
Clearfield got the run back in the bottom of the frame though, as Upper Deck brought in its fourth pitcher of the game.
Kyler Kephart was hit with a pitch to start the inning. He moved to second on a wild pitch before Derek Danver tripled into center, allowing Kephart to score and give the Chiefs a 3-2 advantage.
Upper Deck led off the top of the seventh with two straight singles, but Georgino got out of the inning with no further damage.
"He pitched a super game," said Lansberry of Georgino. "He's a super kid. I wish we had him all the time. He kept his composure and he never got upset. He's a good, solid kid."
Ronny Ogden had two hits for the Chiefs, while Cole Kephart added a sacrifice bunt.
Clearfield improved to 5-5 overall. The Chiefs were set to return to action this morning against Corning, N.Y. and Keystone.
Nor-Gwyn 6, Clearfield 3
Post 6 had seven hits against Nor-Gwyn in its second game of the day, but four errors led to a 6-3 loss to the Hawks.
The Chiefs score two runs in the first inning on an RBI double by Andrew Redden and an RBI single from Jon Janocko.
Wyatt Westen had a sacrifice fly to score Ronny Ogden and give Clearfield a 3-2 lead.
Nor-Gwyn responded with a four-run fifth inning to take home the victory.
Westen got the loss on the mound, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing four earned runs on five hits and two walks. Tanner Ogden pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
"Wyatt pitched well for four innings," Lansberry said. "He might have got a little bit tired. But I'm pleased with how well we competed today. We are 1-1 and that isn't too shabby."
Ronny Ogden again had two hits for the Chiefs.
