Carnival kicks off summer reading program at Shaw Public Library
Saturday, June 16, 2012
Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library kicked off its annual summer reading program with a carnival of fun, entertainment and one of the largest crowds in recent years. Children enjoyed games and food outdoors before moving inside for a special presentation by Jan Kinney, sponsored by Walter Hopkins Co. LLC.
There were several great prizes, including a T-shirt drawing, tickets to the DuBois Area United Way Wing Fling 2012 donated by the Clearfield County Society for Handicapped/Dis abled Citizens, and a 2012 Clearfield Swimming Pool pass sponsored by Walter Hopkins Co LLC. With the summer reading program officially started, children will have the opportunity to participate in many more activities over the next several months.
On Monday at 6:30 p.m., Shaw Public Library will host its first Family Fun Night of the summer. Several famous nighttime visitors will make a special appearance at the library. Youth of all ages and their families are invited to meet and greet each visitor and enjoy an activity at each station.
Shavers Creek Environmental Center, sponsored by Clearfield Bank & Trust Co., will present information to youth of all ages about a unique creature of night: owls. Youth of all ages are invited to "OWLS" at the library Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
All youth in attendance may register to win a door prize to be drawn at the conclusion of the program.
The "What a Hoot!" program Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. brings craft time to the library for all school age youth. Participants in the School Age A and School Age B program should bring a brown paper bag with them as they create their own owl to display at home.
The youth programs for the first week wrap up Thursday at 7 p.m. "Night Owls" invites youth of all ages to find something to love about the library at night. All participants are encouraged to wear their pajamas.
The young adult and adult summer reading programs welcome Megan Lanich of My Country Candles & Gifts Thursday. Lanich will present "Candle Magic" to reveal the enchantment of candles. Participants may choose to attend the program from 3-4 p.m. or 6-7 p.m. Program registrations for both times are available by contacting the front desk during regular business hours.
Young adult summer reading participants are also encouraged to return to the library Friday at 1 p.m. for "Jewelry Creation." Local jewelry designer Mallory Janocko will assist young adults in designing and creating their own jewelry. Sign-ups for this program are available by calling the library during regular business hours.
Registration for the Dream Big: Read summer reading program continues throughout the summer. All registrations are completed online at Shaw Public Library's website www.clear field.org/shaw.
Participants are asked to pick up their registration packets at the front desk of the library upon registering for one of the programs.
Children from birth through preschool age should enroll in the Read-to-Me program. Youth who have completed kindergarten through grade two are encouraged to participate in the School Age A program, and those who have completed grades three through five will enroll in the School Age B program. The Own the Night young adult summer reading program is open to anyone who has completed grades six through 11, and Between the Book Covers adult summer reading program is available to all adults, including 2012 high school graduates.
The library is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Fridays from noon to 5 p.m. Additional information is available by calling 765-3271 during regular business hours or by visiting www.clearfield.org/ shaw.
