McMasters attends conference Monday, June 11, 2012 FLORENCE, Italy - Wesley Scott McMasters of St. Lawrence attended an international conference of the authors Emerson, Hawthorne and Poe (Conversazioni in Italia: Emerson, Hawthorne, and Poe) in Florence, Italy, Friday through yesterday. Wesley received a grant for travel from the Poe Studies Association. He presented a paper, "To the Noblest of Her Sex- Oh! And Her Boyfriend Too-A Closer Look at Poe and the Brownings," discussing Poe's communication with other poets of his time, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning. He was accompanied by his former mentor and professor, Dr. Richard Kopley from Penn State, who provided the welcoming oration of the Edgar Allen Poe segment of the conference. Wesley has been accompanied by Kopley at three previous author's conferences. Wesley formerly presented biographical work on Mort McMichael, another associate of Poe, at a conference in Philadelphia. Wesley received his Bachelor of Arts in Letters, Arts and Sciences from Penn State and a Master of Arts in English at the University of Maine. Wesley currently writes poetry and fiction, and will be teaching undergraduate English in the fall. He has short stories published on bartlebysnopes.com and the site "Girls with Insurance." Wesley graduated from Moshannon Valley High School and is the son of Scott and Rosemary McMasters, and the grandson of Scott and Ann McMasters of Coalport.
