Philipsburg Pirates defeat Pleasant Gap
Saturday, June 09, 2012
By Jon Christoff Sports Writer
PHILIPSBURG - A loss isn't something the Philipsburg Pirates experience a lot during Centre County League regular season play.
Fresh off their first ‘L' of the season to Lewistown, the Pirates were quick in getting back on the winning track.
Matt McCamley launched a 2-run home run and Tyler Golden pitched a complete game, as Philipsburg bounced back with a 10-2 win over visiting Pleasant Gap on Friday.
"We definitely wanted to jump out early," said Pirates head coach/shortstop Ryan Mostyn, "and we knew Golden would throw well for us tonight. He threw strikes, got after their bats and we played good defense behind him."
If Philipsburg had any ill effects from Thursday's setback, it didn't show it against Pleasant Gap starter Zach Spangler in the early innings of the contest.
The Pirates jumped all over Spangler, as they carried a 6-0 lead after the first two innings.
Philipsburg plated four in the first, highlighted by a 2-run single from Nick Daye and an RBI double from Tyler Good.
McCamley put an exclamation point on the Pirates' early-inning success at the plate, as his 2-run homer in the second easily cleared the trees beyond the left-field fence.
"That was a shot," Mostyn said of McCamley's blast. "That was probably the farthest ball I've seen hit here and we've played a lot of games here. It's 315 or 320 (down the line) and it was probably 415 or 420. It was over top of the trees."
The run support was more than enough for Golden, who scattered six hits, walked one and struck out six.
Golden worked ahead in the count, starting off 17 of the 28 batters he faced with a strike, as he needed just 80 pitches to earn the complete game.
"He pitches to contact and does a nice job of that," said Mostyn of Golden, who went to a 3-ball count just four times. "We just hope our defense backs him up, and tonight we did."
The Pirates added some insurance in the fourth after Scott Winters doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly, while Daye laced a one-out triple in the sixth before crossing the plate on an RBI groundout from J.D. Mason.
Philipsburg added two more for good measure in the sixth with McCamley lacing an RBI single that ended up plating a pair after an errant throw from the outfield.
McCamley finished the contest 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while Daye added two hits in three appearances with two RBIs to his credit.
In all, Philipsburg pounded out eight hits against a pair of Pleasant Gap pitchers.
The Pirates (6-1) return to action on Sunday when they entertain Clarence.
"They're 6-2 or 7-2," Mostyn said of Clarence, "so it should be a pretty decent ballgame."
