Clearfield shut out by DuBois Tuesday, May 04, 2010 By Jon Christoff Sports Writer HYDE - The Clearfield softball team couldn't solve the enigma that was DuBois pitcher Sami Jo Kirk on April 1 in a 12-0 shutout. Kirk hurled a two-hitter at the Lady Bisons in that five-inning win with six strikeouts, and the Lady Beaver freshman continued her mastery of Clearfield with an even more impressive outing on Monday. The DuBois pitcher allowed just one hit - a single off the bat of Mikayla Ebeling to lead off the fourth inning - issued two walks and struck out 13, as the Lady Beavers again shut out the Lady Bisons, 10-0, in six innings. "We had about the same result as the last time," said Clearfield assistant coach Rodger Porter. "I don't know if she's confusing our kids or what, but they're not real aggressive at the plate. It's disappointing, but DuBois has a good ball team." The Lady Beavers used an 11-run inning to sink the Lady Bisons in their first meeting, but DuBois was able to nickel-and-dime multiple runs in five of the six innings against Clearfield pitcher Heather Picard. Picard gave up back-to-back singles to open the contest, which led to the first run of the game, but retired the next three hitters she faced to leave a runner stranded on third. The Lady Beavers were back at it again, though, in the second after Kirk escaped her biggest jam of the game. Janell Zalno reached on a passed ball after striking out, and Suzie Colesar walked to put runners on first and second, but Kirk bore down to pick up her third strikeout of the inning. The final strikeout of the first began a stretch of seven straight K's. "I think she's mischievously fast, and she has some different pitches," Porter said of Kirk. "She has that changeup that got a couple of us and confused them. "I could tell (looking) down the box that they were a little confused at the plate. We tried to make adjustments." The Lady Beavers added two more in the second on a two-run single from Casey Wilcox, who had a game-high three RBIs. DuBois had six players rap two hits apiece in slugging 13 hits against Picard, who struck out six and walked three. The Lady Bisons defense also faltered behind their hurler, as they committed five errors in the contest - including three in a three-run fourth inning. "We're young, as (head coach) Bob (Dixon) keeps saying," said Porter. "We're young and we're getting there. We have a couple freshmen out there playing and sophomores. We're young, but we're going to keep battling and keep working to get better. "(DuBois) is a good ball team. They've got good pitching and good hitting. We just couldn't get the bat on the ball." Melinda Owens drew a one-out walk in the sixth for the Lady Bisons, but was unable to get any farther. Kirk finished the game with her last strikeout and a groundout to first to drop Clearfield to 6-6 on the season. The Lady Bisons will try to bounce back Wednesday at Bradford. DuBois-10 K.
