Bowman blasts two home runs to lead Clearfield to win
Thursday, April 29, 2010
By Rich Murawski Assistant Sports Editor
HYDE - B.J. Bowman hit a pair of two-run home runs and Mackenzie Moore collected three hits to help the Clearfield softball team turn away visiting Brookville, 10-2, Wednesday at the Bison Sports Complex.
Clearfield got production up and down the lineup as six different players had hits and seven scored at least one run. The Lady Bisons also took advantage of six Brookville errors, scoring six unearned runs. Clearfield made just one error.
"Just about everyone in the lineup had a hit," Clearfield head coach Bob Dixon said. "We hit the ball well. We've been working on that. And we played some pretty good defense."
Heather Picard picked up the win in the circle for Clearfield. She allowed two runs - one earned - on seven hits in seven innings of work. Picard walked one batter and fanned 10. Eight of the 10 batters she struck out were caught looking.
"Heather threw a nice game. She located pretty well," Dixon said.
After a scoreless first inning, Clearfield put up five in the bottom of the second inning using three hits and two Lady Raider errors to nearly bat around.
Mikayla Ebeling got things started by drawing a one-out walk. After Destiney Kanouff moved Ebeling to second with a groundout, Baillie Davis singled. Ebeling scored on the hit and Davis moved to second base on a Brookville error.
Melinda Owens reached on an error after the Ebeling hit. Davis scored on the play. Janell Zalno followed with a base hit to plate Owens, and Bowman launched a one-ball, one-strike pitch over the left field fence to give Clearfield a 5-0 lead.
"We always try to keep getting better, and I thought we played better today," Dixon said. "We jumped on them early and got some runs, and that gave us a little confidence."
Clearfield added a run in the third inning on an Ebeling RBI single. Moore scored on the hit after leading off the inning with the first of her two doubles.
Brookville tried to get back in the game, plating a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to cut Clearfield's lead to 6-2.
Lady Raider catcher Kristen Gorden was key in both frames, scoring the first Brookville run before adding an RBI single an inning later.
Brookville pitcher Brianna Dietrich also did her best to keep Clearfield from scoring in those innings, collecting three of her eight strikeouts in that span. But the Lady Bisons got to her again in the sixth.
With one out, Zalno recorded her second single of the day in front of Bowman, who clubbed another one-ball, one-strike pitch from Dietrich to straightaway center field.
After Suzie Colesar reached on an infield error and took second on a wild pitch, she moved to third base on a Moore base hit. Two batters later, Ebeling stroked a single to center field that scored both Colesar and Moore.
Ebeling was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs.
"She's been a good addition to the team since we brought her up," Dixon said of Ebeling.
Clearfield improved to 6-5 with the win.
"That's a good thing," Dixon said of getting above .500 for the season. "The girls are playing better and getting more confident. Hopefully we can keep up the good work."
Gorden led Brookville with two hits. Abby Beatty had an RBI groundout.
Clearfield returns to action Monday, playing host to DuBois.
