Campus Roundup: McGary named Male Athlete of the Year Tuesday, April 27, 2010 By Josh Mlot Sports Writer Many former Progressland student-athletes are rounding out their spring seasons at the collegiate level, as teams draw closer to the postseason - if they are successful enough to get there. Here's a glance at how some locals either jockeyed for playoff position or wrapped up the year over the last week:
Baseball Bart McGary, Pitt-Bradford: The former Golden Tide standout, who was recently named Pitt-Bradford's Male Athlete of the Year, was 3-for-4 in a doubleheader-opening, 13-6 loss to Frostburg State Saturday. McGary added an RBI in Game 2, as the Panthers avenged the defeat with a 5-2 win. Pitt-Bradford (17-19) is back on the diamond this Saturday with a twin-bill at Penn State Altoona. A.J. Czap, Shippensburg: Czap was 2-for-4 in the season finale Saturday, a 12-8 win over West Chester. He was also 1-for-3 in an 11-2 loss earlier in the day, as the Red Raiders split the twin-bill. The former Mountie finished the year with a .280 average, five home runs and 24 RBIs for Shippensburg (13-36). Adam Jury, Slippery Rock: The former Bison was 2-for-4 with an RBI single in a 4-3, come-from-behind victory over Lake Erie in Sunday's final regular-season contest. Jury is batting .329 with 37 RBIs as he helps lead The Rock (25-21) into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs Wednesday. As a No. 4 seed, Jury and company will take on West Chester in the opening round. Kyle Kline, Penn State Behrend: Kline scored two runs in the opener of a doubleheader sweep over Franciscan in which Behrend opened up the offense to the tune of 13-1 and 20-1 victories. The Lions (22-12) are back in action today, traveling to D'Youville. Philip Solley, Pitt-Bradford: Solley rebounded from a hitless effort in Saturday's opener against Frostburg State to go 1-for-4 in the nightcap victory. B.J. Stephens, Mount Aloysius: Stephens was 0-for-2 in his third appearance of the season, a 14-3 win in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Lancaster Saturday. The Mounties (16-19) fell, 9-7, in Game 2. The former Black Knight and his teammates play at Frostburg State today. Matt McCamley, Lock Haven: McCamley closed out the season in style, going 4-for-4 in a 14-13 win over California (Pa.) in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday. The Eagles fell, 9-8, in Game 2, with the former P-O standout going 2-for-3. McCamley finished his redshirt junior year batting .370 with 53 RBIs for Lock Haven (16-28). Matt Curtis, Allegany: Curtis and his teammates moved to 30-9 on the year with a doubleheader split against CCBC-Essex Saturday, taking the opener, 12-2, but falling in the second contest, 6-3.
Softball Holly Lansberry, Lycoming: The former Lady Tide star was 1-for-2 in the batters box and picked up her 10th win of the season as she threw a complete game, whiffing five batters, in a 2-1 victory over Albright Saturday. Lycoming (13-23) was 6-4 losers in the twin-bill's second game, as Lansberry was held hitless. In the circle, she has 92 strikeouts and a 2.87 ERA in 119 2-3 innings pitched. The Lady Warriors round out the season at Alvernia on Saturday. Ashley Demchak, Lycoming: Demchak scored her side's first run of the game as the Lady Warriors edged Albright, 2-1, in Saturday's opening game. The former Curwensville standout is batting .268 with 12 RBIs. The games were the final home contests of the season for Lycoming. Alanna Luzier, Penn State Altoona: The former Lady Bison was 4-for-4 with three runs scored as the Lady Lions dropped visiting D'Youville, 9-1, Saturday. The doubleheader nightcap saw Luzier pick up another three hits as her side swept the day with an 11-8 victory. Penn State Altoona (16-13-1) travels to LaRoche today. Brittany Pataky, Lock Haven: Pataky had a hit, two runs scored and two driven in as the Lady Eagles were eliminated from the PSAC playoffs with a pair of 5-4 losses to West Chester Saturday. Pataky's side had taken a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series with a victory the day before. Lock Haven (22-21) was 2-2 in the tournament, picking up two wins Friday.
