Campus roundup: Area athletes shine as spring season winds down Wednesday, April 21, 2010 By Josh Mlot Sports Writer The winter season is officially complete, which leaves the spotlight firmly on individuals performing in the spring disciplines. Here's a look at how former Progressland student-athletes are doing with baseball, softball and track in full swing at the collegiate level: Baseball Corey Bookhamer, Duquesne: The former Bison standout made his first collegiate appearance Tuesday, hurling one scoreless inning against Penn State while allowing two hits. He had no walks or strikeouts. The Nittany Lions were victorious, 15-9. Duquesne (7-29) is now set for a four-game homestand, hosting West Virginia today before a three-game series against St. Bonaventure over the weekend. A.J. Czap, Shippensburg: The former Mountie was 1-for-4 with an RBI single in a 7-4 loss to regional rival Shepherd Tuesday. The junior is hitting .283 for Shippensburg (12-33), which wraps up its season with a home-and-home against West Chester on Friday and Saturday. Adam Jury, Slippery Rock: Fresh off being named the PSAC Western Division co-Player of the Week, the former Bison helped The Rock to a doubleheader sweep of West Liberty State Tuesday, 16-8 and 10-2. Jury was 3-for-8 with two RBIs and a Game 2 home run in the twin bill. The junior leads the team with 34 RBIs on a .327 average as one of only three players on the team to have started all 41 games. Slippery Rock (23-20) hosts Lake Erie College in a pair of doubleheaders Friday and Saturday as it looks to solidify a playoff berth. Kyle Kline, Penn State Behrend: Kline came in off the bench to score one run in an 8-6 loss to Allegheny Tuesday. He has appeared in 21 games this season. The Lions are 19-11 and set for a doubleheader hosting Medaille today. Bart McGary, Pitt-Bradford: The Panthers were swept in doubleheader action Tuesday by visiting Fredonia State, 7-3 and 14-6. McGary was 2-for-6 with a run scored on the afternoon. The senior leads all regular players with a .404 average and 44 RBIs. Pitt-Bradford (14-18) is back in action today with a twin bill against Hilbert. Ben McGary, Pitt-Bradford: The former Curwensville standout got his first career start Tuesday, getting the loss in a 14-6 defeat to Fredonia State in Game 2 of a doubleheader. McGary has appeared in 13 games on the mound for the Panthers. Philip Solley, Pitt-Bradford: Solley was the starting catcher in Game 1 of Tuesday's two losses to Fredonia State, going 0-for-1, and then picked up a base knock in Game 2 as the designated hitter. The senior is batting .361 with 30 runs knocked in on the season. Dylan Viehdorfer, Geneva: The Golden Tornadoes swept Westminster in two games Tuesday, grabbing 5-4 and 2-1 home victories. Viehdorfer has a 9.26 ERA in nine pitching appearances for 10-17 Geneva. Matt McCamley, Lock Haven: The former Mountie was 2-for-7 with two RBIs on the day as Lock Haven was swept by Mansfield in a doubleheader Tuesday, 11-4 and 10-7. McCamley also threw 2-3 of an inning on the mound. Previously, McCamley homered twice over the weekend as The Eagles (14-26) dropped Clarion three times. Lock Haven closes out its regular season with a home-and-home series against California (Pa.) on Friday and Saturday.
Softball Kiley Abersold, Shippensburg: Abersold was 3-for-5 in a doubleheader sweep of East Stroudsburg Saturday, picking up a run scored, and RBI and two walks. The Lady Raiders (16-26) won by scores of 10-9 and 10-2 in five innings to finish up the regular season. The former Lady Mountie closed out her senior season with a .301 batting average and 12 RBIs. Ashley Demchak, Lycoming: Demchak had two plate appearances, walking once, in an 11-3 loss to Elizabethtown Saturday during the second game of a doubleheader. The Lady Warriors dropped the opening game as well, 3-0. Demchak is batting .265 with seven RBIs in 20 appearances for Lycoming (8-20), which travels to Keystone for two games today. Holly Lansberry, Lycoming: The former Curwensville standout pitched a complete game, earning the loss in a 3-0 defeat to Elizabethtown in Game 1 of Saturday's twin bill. She struck out six and walked five while giving up four hits. Despite going hitless on Saturday, Lansberry is batting .364 on the year, while maintaining a 3.62 ERA and a 5-9 record in the circle. She leads all Lady Warrior pitchers in wins, striking out 63 in 79 1-3 innings of work. Alanna Luzier, Penn State Altoona: The former Lady Bison went 1-for-4 with two RBIs in a 7-4 win to open doubleheader action against Hilbert Sunday, and went 1-for-2 in a 14-9 Game 2 loss. Luzier is batting .282 in 24 starts for the Lady Lions (12-13), who host to Franciscan today. Their doubleheader against Penn State Harrisburg set for Thursday has been cancelled. Brittany Pataky, Lock Haven: Pataky was 3-for-7 with two doubles as Lock Haven split a doubleheader with East Stroudsburg Tuesday, taking Game 1, 7-0, before dropping Game 2, 4-1. She is batting .286 on the season for the 20-19 Lady Eagles. The Pennsylvania State Atheltic Conference playoffs are set to start Friday. Rachelle Yarger, Clarion: Yarger helped her side to a doubleheader sweep of defending national champion Lock Haven Saturday, launching a grand slam to close out a 12-3, six-inning victory in Game 1. The Lady Eagles were 9-7 victors in Game 2. The former P-O player was 2-for-6 with three runs scored and five RBIs on the day. Clarion wrapped up the season with a 6-29 record.
Track and Field John Bowman, Penn State Behrend: The former Clearfield athlete helped the Lions win the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on March 12th, as he set a new school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 129-3, good for third place. He also won the javelin with a toss of 174-6. Behrend finished with 204 team points. The Lions came back for another team victory Saturday, where Bowman finished ninth in the discus and fifth in the javelin. Penn State Behrend is back in action Saturday at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational. Michael Johnson, Penn State Behrend: Johnson was fourth in the high jump, on the third-place 4x100 relay squad, sixth in the 400 hurdles and on the second-place 4x400 relay for the Lions' success at March 12th's Carnegie Mellon Invitational. For Saturday's action he was on two runner-up relays (4x100 and 4x400) and second in the high jump.
