Campus Roundup: Spring Sports finally in full swing Tuesday, April 06, 2010 By Jon Christoff and Josh Mlot Sports Writers Warm weather has finally arrived, and among many things it signals that spring sports are in full swing. At the collegiate level, many of Progressland's former student-athletes are in the midst of their respective seasons, be it in baseball, softball or track and field. There is even some gymnastics action that wrapped up at the Big Ten Championships. Here's a look at how some locals are doing at the next level: Baseball A.J. Czap, Shippensburg: The Raiders were swept in doubleheader action by Millersville Saturday, 6-1 and 3-1. Czap was hitless in the two games, but is batting .271 on the season. The former Mountie has started all 31 of his team's games and is tied for the team lead with four home runs. Shippensburg is 9-22 and is back on the diamond today hosting Bloomsburg. Adam Jury, Slippery Rock: Jury was 1-for-3 in Game 1 of a doubleheader with Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a 6-1 loss. The former Bison was hitless in Game 2, a 6-3 victory. Jury is hitting .261 with a team-high 19 RBIs for The Rock (14-16), who host Seton Hill on Wednesday. Kyle Kline, Penn State Behrend: Kline was 0-for-5 during Saturday's doubleheader with LaRoche College, with the Lions winning the first game, 16-9, and falling in the second, 12-11. The Clearfield native is batting .257 in 13 appearances for his 13-5 side, which will host Washington & Jefferson today. Bart McGary, Pitt-Bradford: The Panthers split a doubleheader of offensive slugfests on Saturday, taking on rival campus Pitt-Greensburg. Pitt-Bradford lost 18-10 in Game 1, but took the second contest, 22-14. McGary was 3-for-5 with four ribbies in the earlier matchup, and then exploded in the nightcap, going 4-for-5 with two homers and six runs knocked in. The former Golden Tide leader is batting .431 on the season, with 27 RBIs in only 18 games for the 7-11 Panthers. Pitt-Bradford will now host D'Youville on Wednesday. Ben McGary, Pitt-Bradford: The recent Curwensville graduate has a 5.02 ERA in nine appearances, including 1 1-3 innings of work in Saturday's second game against Pitt-Greensburg. He allowed one earned run in the game. Philip Solley, Pitt-Bradford: Solley was 2-for-5 with three RBIs in Saturday's 22-14 win over Pitt-Greensburg, and is hitting .364 on the year. Dylan Viehdorfer, Geneva: After winning five in a row in March, Geneva is mired in an eight-game losing streak, including a doubleheader loss to Thomas More on Saturday, 11-4 and 12-4. Viehdorfer has struck out 12 batters in 15 1-3 innings of work this season and is 1-0 for the Golden Tornadoes (8-12). B.J. Stephens, Mount Aloysius: The former Mo Valley student-athlete was 1-for-2 with a run scored coming off the bench for the Mounties in a 21-5 win over D'Youville in Game 2 of a doubleheader Saturday. Mount Aloysius also won Game 1, 9-3. Stephens is batting .333 in just two appearances this season. The Mounties (7-12) travel to Penn State Altoona on Wednesday. Matt Curtis, Allegany: The former Philipsburg-Osceola standout helped Allegany College of Maryland extend its winning streak to 12 games as it swept two doubleheaders over the weekend. The Trojans defeated Anne Arundel Community College 8-6 and 9-1 on Saturday and then downed Monroe Community College 3-1 and 8-4 on Sunday. Allegany is 18-3 on the year and travels to Hagerstown today. Softball Kiley Abersold, Shippensburg: Abersold was 2-for-4 with an RBI in Game 2 of a doubleheader sweep at Clarion on Saturday afternoon. A Lady Raider senior, Abersold added a single and an RBI in the opener. Abersold, who claimed a District 6 title with P-O in 2006, has started in 21 of Shippensburg's 30 contests. Abersold has a team-high .338 average to go along with three doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs. Shippensburg (11-19) travels to East Stroudsburg for a doubleheader this afternoon. Ashley Demchak, Lycoming: Demchak crossed the plate with Lycoming's only run in the 10th inning of a 4-3 win over Arcadia on March 27. The Lady Warrior freshman has made seven starts in her squad's 22 contests and has made 10 more appearances. A former Lady Tide catcher, Demchak has a .296 average and leads the team with two home runs. Demchak also has a pair of doubles to go along with five RBIs. Holly Lansberry, Lycoming: Lansberry has had a solid start to her collegiate career for the Lady Warriors (7-15), whether in the pitcher's circle or as a designated hitter. The former Curwensville standout scored Lycoming's only run in a doubleheader defeat against No. 5 Messiah on Thursday, while picking up a 1-0 shutout in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Arcadia on March 27. Lansberry is currently second on the team with a .375 average after starting 14 of the Lady Warriors' 22 games and appearing in five others. In the circle, Lansberry is 4-7 with a 5.16 ERA in 59 1/3 innings of work. Lansberry has struck out 41 hitters and has hurled five complete games. Alanna Luzier, Penn State Altoona: Luzier, a former Clearfield athlete, has started in 14 of Penn State Altoona's games this season, and has turned in a .245 average in 49 plate appearances. Luzier has 12 hits, including three doubles and a home run. A sophomore infielder, Luzier has crossed the plate 12 times. Luzier has made just four errors and has recorded 32 putouts for a .930 fielding percentage. Brittany Pataky, Lock Haven: A clean-up hitting first baseman, Pataky has started in 22 of Lock Haven's 25 games this season and helped the Lady Eagles to a doubleheader sweep of Kutztown on Saturday. Pataky, a former Clearfield standout, was 1-for-3 with an RBI in the opening win, and added an RBI in Lock Haven's 3-1 win to complete the sweep. Pataky is third on the team with a .292 average and is second with 21 hits. A senior, Pataky has connected on four doubles and a home run, while driving in 11 runs. Pataky has committed just one error and has 160 putouts to her credit. Lock Haven (13-12) hosts East Stroudsburg this afternoon. Jenessa Stiles, Penn State Altoona: Stiles, a freshman third baseman, has started nine games for the Lady Lions, who are 7-8-1 on the season. A former Curwensville infielder, Stiles has a .190 average with four hits and three RBIs. Stiles has made just two miscues at the hot corner. The Lady Lions (7-8-1) travel to Mount Aloysius on Wednesday. Rachelle Yarger, Clarion: The Lady Eagles were swept in a doubleheader by Shippensburg on Saturday to drop to 2-19 on the season. A senior, Yarger had an RBI in a 9-6 loss in Game 1, while going 1-for-3 as a designated hitter in Game 2. Yarger, a former P-O standout, has a .259 average after appearing in 12 games, while smacking a double and driving in three runs. Clarion is back on the diamond this afternoon at Mansfield. Track and Field Michael Johnson, Penn State Behrend: Johnson and the Penn State Behrend men's track and field team turned in a solid effort at the Bill Van Horne Invitational at Wheeling (W.Va.) Jesuit University on March 26 and 27. Both Johnson and his squad finished fourth, as the former Clearfield athlete finished fourth in the high jump after clearing 1.85 meters. The team finished fourth out of 14. Penn State Behrend returns to competition on Friday at the Bucknell Invitational. Men's Gymnastics Scott Rosenthal, Penn State: Rosenthal wrapped up a solid freshman campaign for the Nittany Lion men's gymnastics team, which was in action at the Big Ten championships last weekend. A Clearfield alum, Rosenthal competed in the finals of the still rings, where he finished 10th with a score of 14.250. Penn State will travel to the United States Military Academy on April 16 and 17 for a chance to capture its 13th national team title. All former area athletes who play a sanctioned college sport are eligible to be recognized by The Progress for their athletic endeavors in the College Roundup.
