Swales explains meaning behind "Kitchen Project" Monday, March 08, 2010 By Jane Elling Staff Writer On Thursday, students from the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center continued working on a project at Clearfield Driving Park. Clearfield Fair Queen Committee Chairman Robert Swales explained the history of the Kitchen Project. "The late ‘Queen Mom' Arlene Swales had a vision of two major projects she wanted to see completed in the Expo II building. Her first dream was the complete renovation and expansion of the queen's office and dressing rooms. This was accomplished and finished in time for the 2006 queen's court. "She immediately turned her attention to getting a kitchen installed next to the queen's office. The purpose was to help in future fundraising and to help the fair board in marketing the building as a premier rental facility. "Although her health was deteriorating rapidly, she still wanted to push ahead. An effort was made to obtain a grant through state Representative Camille "Bud" George, D-74 from Houtzdale. Even though the state was going through very tough economic times, George was able to secure a $5,000 grant for the project. Local businesses are working with us to stay within our budget. Some have made outright donations while others are offering special pricing. A complete list of contributors will be published upon completion of the project. "Neither one of these projects would have been possible without the complete cooperation of the Clearfield County Fair and Park Board, Rep. George, the Clearfield County Career and Technology enter under the direction of Lois Richards along with the carpentry department headed by Robin Steffan, the Electrical Department headed by Jack Rumfola and the Drafting Department under Brad Dixon." Swales went on to thank the Clearfield Fire Department for donating a commercial 10-burner, double oven, gas stove. "At this time," he said, "we are still in need of several major items such as a commercial sink and an eight to 10-foot ventilation hood with exhaust fan. We would be very grateful to anyone that could help us in any way to complete the project." Expressing appreciation on Thursday for the project work being done were Dave Franson, Fair Board President; Lois Richards, CCCTC director; George and his wife Edna George; and Swales. The students were praised for their work and using their talents for the project.
