Campus Roundup: Janocko, Sipes receive big honors

As each day passes, the winter season is heading toward its completion. Several former local athletes are still competing for their respective colleges and universities, while several others have earned postseason accolades from the fall. Here is a look at how they are faring:

Football
Andrew Janocko, Pitt: Janocko and nine Panther teammates were recently named to the Big East All-Academic team. The redshirt sophomore quarterback was tabbed for the second time in his career. Janocko is majoring in History.
Nick Sipes, Clarion: The accolades keep rolling for Sipes, who was earlier named a first-team Football Gazette and Daktronics Super Region 1 first-team selection.
The former Curwensville stalwart recently was named to the Football Gazette's All-American team for his play at strong safety. Sipes, a junior, earned a third-team distinction after leading the Golden Eagles (8-3) with 112 tackles, six sacks and 12 tackles for losses.

Wrestling
Derek Caldwell, Lock Haven: Caldwell and the Eagles fell to 2-7 with a 25-12 setback against Bucknell on Feb. 5.
The former Curwensville wrestler dropped to 2-14 on the season, after coming up short in a 4-0 loss to the Bisons' Shane Riccio, who is ranked No. 16 nationally.
Caldwell and Lock Haven will look to get back on track today when they entertain Bloomsburg.
Kyle Keane, Pitt-Johnstown: Keane, currently tabbed the nation's No. 3-ranked wrestler in D-II, and his Mountain Cat teammates defeated D-I Clarion on Feb. 5, 18-15, to improve to 11-2.
The former Clearfield standout, earned a 10-6 decision over Justin McCrillis to bring UPJ to within three. Keane and the Mountain Cats, who have a 57-match home winning streak, return to the mat tonight against Mercyhurst for Senior Night.
Matt Kyler, Army: Due to the inclement weather, Kyler and his Army teammates couldn't compete at the All-Academy Championships last weekend.
The Black Knights (5-3) are back in action Saturday to wrap up the regular season with home matches against Millersville and Sacred Heart.
Brad Pataky, Penn State: Pataky posted a pair of impressive victories last weekend to help the Nittany Lions go 2-0 against a pair of Big Ten opponents.
The former Bison grappler, who is 23-6, tech falled Northwestern's Levi Mele 15-0, in 3:14, and major decisioned Michigan's Sean Boyle, 13-0.
Penn State topped the Wildcats 37-10, and beat the Wolverines 29-10.
The Nittany Lions (12-5-1) entertain Michigan State this evening at 7. The match will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Men's Basketball
Tyler Ferguson, Pitt-Bradford: The Panthers picked up their ninth straight win with a 74-68 victory over D'Youville on Feb. 3, but have since dropped back-to-back contests to Penn State Altoona and Penn State Behrend.
Ferguson, a West Branch alum, poured in 14 in the win over D'Youville on 6-of-7 shooting, while also posting four and five points against Altoona and Behrend, respectively.
Pitt-Bradford (12-10) is back on the court Saturday when it hosts Franciscan University.

Women's Basketball
Michelle Peoples, Mount Aloysius: The Lady Mounties earned their fifth win of the season with a 69-45 triumph over Franciscan University on Feb. 3 before losing their 15th on Sunday with a 67-55 setback at Medaille College.
Peoples, a Glendale graduate, had five points and three rebounds in Mount Aloysius' win, while pulling down four boards and dishing out an assist in the loss.
Peoples and the Lady Mounties are back on the hardwood Saturday at Hilbert College.

Swimming and Diving
Chris Bodle, Westminster: The Titans' men won their final dual meet of the season Sunday, dropping Mount Union, 161-128. Bodle finished sixth in the 1650 free in 19:40.29, and was hit with a disqualification in the 200 IM.
The former Bison helped his team finish the season with a 6-3 record.
The Westminster swimming and diving team received recognition as a College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America team.
John Bodle, Westminster: Like his brother, Bodle was also hit with a DQ while swimming the 200 IM in a 161-128 victory over Mount Union on Sunday. He also swam to a fourth-place finish in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 2:19.11.
Amber Centi, Lincoln (Ill.): After a long break, the Lady Lynx will be back in the pool at the Region IV Championships today and Saturday.
John Lytle, Notre Dame: The former Clearfield standout was honored with the Big East Conference Scholar-Athlete Award, chosen as the male representative for Notre Dame. Along with the award comes a $2,000 scholarship.
Lytle will now try to lead the Irish to a conference title as the week-long Big East Championships kick off today and continue through Feb. 20 in Pittsburgh.

Gymnastics
Scott Rosenthal, Penn State: The Penn State freshman and two coaches and two teammates competed at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas Feb. 4 and 6.
Rosenthal, a Clearfield graduate, competed exclusively in the still rings, where he earned a 35th-place finish with a final tally of 13.050.
The Nittany Lions, who are ranked fifth nationally, are back in action Feb. 20 when they host Illinois.

All former area athletes who play a sanctioned college sport are eligible to be recognized by The Progress for their athletic endeavors in the College Roundup.
