Campus Roundup Wednesday, February 03, 2010 By Jon Christoff Sports Writer With the end of the regular season wrapping up in most sports, some local athletes are prepping for the postseason. Here's a look at how they're faring: Wrestling Derek Caldwell, Lock Haven: The Eagles split a pair of dual meets over the weekend, as they topped Cleveland State on Saturday and fell to West Virginia on Sunday. Caldwell (2-13), wrestling at 174, dropped both of his matches for Lock Haven. The former Curwensville grappler lost a 7-4 decision to Cleveland State's Marcus Effner and was defeated by the Mountaineers' Matt Weston, 9-5. Lock Haven (2-6) hosts Bucknell on Friday. Shawn Hall, Penn State DuBois: Hall, a Clearfield graduate, finished second at the Jamestown Community College tournament over the weekend. No other information was available. Penn State DuBois (6-9) hosts the USCAA National Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Mike Horton, Edinboro: Horton sports a 20-14 record for the Fighting Scots, who are ranked No. 20 by InterMat. Edinboro (6-4) has been off since Jan. 23, but will host Bloomsburg on Friday and travel to Cleveland State on Saturday. Kyle Keane, Pitt-Johnstown: Keane earned a 10-0 major decision in the Mountain Cats' 27-15 win over Ashland (Ohio) University on Friday. The former Clearfield standout, who is currently ranked third nationally, defeated Peter Lewis, and will return to the mat on Friday as Pitt-Johnstown hosts Division I Clarion. Matt Kyler, Army: Kyler was named the EIWA Wrestler of the Week following his championship at the New York State Championships. The former Bison state champion is currently 27-2 on the season and is ranked No. 8 nationally by InterMat. The Black Knights (5-3) are back in action Saturday at the Academy Championships in Annapolis, Md. Brad Pataky, Penn State: The 13th-ranked Nittany Lions dropped a 29-6 decision at top-ranked Iowa on Friday, but rebounded with a 22-15 win over Wisconsin on Saturday. Pataky, ranked 12th, dropped a 7-1 decision in Penn State's bout with the Hawkeyes, as undefeated Matt McDonough recorded three takedowns and earned a point for riding time in the match. Like the Nittany Lions as a whole, the former Clearfield standout rebounded against the Badgers. Pataky was in control of his match with Drew Hammen from the onset, and earned an 11-2 major. Pataky is currently 21-6. Penn State (10-5-1) hosts Northwestern on Friday and Michigan on Sunday.
Men's Basketball Tyler Ferguson, Pitt-Bradford: The Pitt-Bradford men's basketball team eked out a 69-68 win over LaRoche College on Saturday. Ferguson, a former West Branch standout on the hardwood, poured in 11 points for the Bobcats (11-8), who travel to D'Youville today. The Pitt-Bradford freshman has started in 15 of 19 games this season, and averages 7.1 points per contest.
Women's Basketball Michelle Peoples, Mount Aloysius: The former Glendale athlete scored four points and had three rebounds in the Lady Mounties' 71-56 loss to D'Youville College on Saturday. Peoples, who added two assists, has seen action in all 18 contests this season with three starts, and averages 2.7 points per game. Mount Aloysius (4-14) travels to Franciscan University this evening. Brittany Barrett, Penn State DuBois: The Lady Lions split a pair of games over the weekend, topping Penn State Mont Alto (81-46) and falling to Penn State Beaver (83-46). Penn State DuBois (6-12) is back in action Saturday at Penn State Hazleton.
Swimming and Diving Mark Krchnak, Duquesne: The Dukes held tough with West Virginia and Virginia Tech on Saturday, but came up shorthanded each time. Duquesne fell to the Mountaineers, 138-126, and to the Hokies, 142-119. Krchnak swam a 26.95 during his leg of the 200 medley relay for the Dukes' ‘B' team, and was sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a 59.36, just .34 seconds out of third. The former Bison state medallist was sixth in the 200 breaststroke, as he touched the wall in 2:11.92. Duquesne travels to Buffalo for the Atlantic 10 championships Feb. 17-20. John Lytle, Notre Dame: Lytle posted a 20.15 in the freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay for Notre Dame, which hosted the Shamrock Invitational. Lytle's time was unable to push the Irish to a win, however, as the quartet ended up third in the event. The former Clearfield swimmer added a second-place finish in the 100 free (45.16) and third in the 200 free (1:40.80) for Notre Dame, which defeated Denver, but lost to Missouri and Iowa. The Irish and Lytle return to action for the Big East Championships Feb. 17-20 at the University of Pittsburgh.
Gymnastics Scott Rosenthal, Penn State: The sixth-ranked Nittany Lions handed William & Mary a 341.45-321.40 defeat on Sunday at Rec Hall. Rosenthal, a Clearfield alum, was tied for ninth in the rings with a 12.100. Rosenthal is one of just five Penn Staters, including Olympian and assistant coach Kevin Tan, to be heading to Las Vegas for the prestigious Winter Cup Challenge on Thursday and Saturday. Penn State will be back in action Feb. 20 when it hosts Illinois.
