Campus Roundup: Winter season in full swing
Friday, January 29, 2010
By Josh Mlot Sports Writer
Now in the heart of the winter season, former Progressland athletes are making their marks felt across the worlds of their respective sports. Whether it's the mat, the pool, the court or the rings, local athletes are finding success across the country. Here's a look at what they're doing:

Wrestling
Derek Caldwell, Lock Haven: In his last trip to the mat, Caldwell took on Edinboro's Phil Moricone at 174 pounds on Jan. 23. Caldwell (3-13) was pinned in 5:42 as the Bald Eagles fell, 32-9, to the 22nd-ranked team in the nation.
Lock Haven (1-5) hosts Cleveland State Saturday afternoon.
Shawn Hall, Penn State DuBois: The first-year team at Penn State DuBois last wrestled on Jan. 23, when the Lions took on Waynesburg. Hall, a 197-pounder, pinned opponent Cody Catalina in 6:52, but PSU DuBois lost the dual meet, 38-6.
Two days earlier, Hall picked up a pinfall against Mercyhurst Northeast's Jeff Harvlin in 2:06.
Penn State DuBois (6-9) is back on the mat Saturday, with the team traveling to the Jamestown CC Tournament.
Kyle Keane, Pitt-Johnstown: Keane went 3-1 at NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Duals Jan. 22-23, as the third-ranked Mountain Cats split four matches.
The former Bison is now ranked No. 3 individually, after defeating Newberry's Josh Whitelock (previously No. 3), 13-5, and Bryce Sopko (previously No. 6) of Limestone (S.C.), 6-3. Keane also decisioned Belmont-Abbey's Jake Varilek, but fell, 7-5, to North Carolina-Pembroke's Rashaad Saunders.
UPJ (9-2) defeated Belmont-Abbey, 41-4, and Limestone, 26-6, while dropping to No. 2 Newberry and UNC-Pembroke, 18-16 and 27-13, respectively.
Matt Kyler, Army: Already Army's career-wins leader, the former Clearfield wrestler became the second-ever two-time champion of the New York State Championships and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 18-team tournament last Sunday.
Kyler picked up his fastest pin of the year, dropping Rochester Tech's Greg Morton in 25 seconds, before tackling SUNY-Oneonta's Joey Hauser in 4:36. The 149-pounder then decisioned Cornell's Hicks Manson, 6-1, before taking the championship match with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over No. 16 Desi Green of Buffalo.
With a record of 27-2 on the year, Kyler is now ranked eighth in the country after reeling off 19 consecutive victories.
The Black Knights will be back to dual meet action on Saturday, wrestling two meets across two states as they travel to both Brown and Harvard.
Jefferson Thomas, Lycoming: The Warrior freshman was edged in a close bout Jan. 22, losing a 6-4 decision to Messiah's Trent Zempel, the ninth-ranked Division III wrestler at the 165-pound weight class.
Thomas (1-1) is wrestling in place of the injured Chris Dahlheimer, ranked No. 5.
No. 21 Lycoming is now 11-5 after winning the dual meet against Messiah, 22-12.
Brad Pataky, Penn State: The Nittany Lions split a pair of Big Ten dual meets last weekend, with Pataky going 2-0.
The former Bison grappler moved to 19-5 with a 7-3 decision over Illinois' John Deneen and a tight 9-7 decision over Ohio State's Nikko Triggas, ranked 19th.
Penn State (9-4-1) dropped the No. 19 Illini, 24-11, but couldn't overcome No. 3 Ohio State, 21-14.
Pataky, now ranked 12th, and his teammates hit the mat again tonight at Iowa, and then host Wisconsin on Sunday.
Andrew Spicer, Penn State DuBois: Spicer came out on the wrong end of his 125-pound match against Waynesburg on Jan. 23, losing a 4-0 decision to Alex Crown.
Against Mercyhurst Northeast, Spicer grabbed a forfeit win.
Jeff Smallwood, Penn State DuBois: Much like his teammate, Spicer, this former Golden Tide grappler could not get the better of his opponent against Waynesburg, as Josh Mollica decisioned Smallwood, 8-2.
Smallwood was a forfeit winner earlier in the week versus Mercyhurst Northeast.

Men's Basketball
Todd Hryn, Pitt-Greensburg: Hryn came off the bench for the Bobcats in an 83-65 loss to Hilbert (N.Y.) on Jan. 18. The former Bison pulled down one rebound in the game.
Pitt-Greensburg was last on the court Wednesday, losing at Franciscan, 82-71.
The Bobcats travel to Penn State Altoona on Wednesday.
Tyler Ferguson, Pitt-Bradford: The former West Branch standout had six points in a 69-65 victory over Pitt-Greensburg on Jan. 23.
The Panther freshman, who is averaging 6.9 points per game and 3.7 rebounds per game, has helped his side win seven in a row, and will be back on the court hosting La Roche College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Pitt-Bradford is now 10-8 on the season.

Peoples is averaging 2.6 points and 1.9 rebounds for Mount Aloysius (4-13), which is back on the court Saturday at D'Youville.
Brittany Barrett, Penn State DuBois: The Lady Lions are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, having last dropped a 68-55 decision to Penn State Greater Allegheny on Tuesday. Prior to that, PSU DuBois fell to Penn State Schuylkill and Penn State Brandywine, during which Barrett contributed eight points and six rebounds.
Barrett and the Lady Lions will be back on the court tonight, playing at Penn State Wilkes Barre.
